Golf’s Wisdom of the Ages

Being Wise is about asking the right question!

Every  golfer knows that players who shoot low scores hold the secret to gaining wisdom. They have the skill to do what only a few people can and, as such, are regarded with envy. Most amateurs feel that way about professionals because of their ability to make a golf ball do amazing things. Yet, amongst that group of great golfers, there are always a few who can rise above the others because of their wisdom relating to all aspects of golf.

There is a difference between great players how know the game and great players who have wisdom about golf. I am not sure if it is an age thing, but generally when we talk about someone being wise, they are older, mature and have plenty of life experience. Additionally, I am not sure if the criteria for identifying a wise person is a personal choice not; I am just not sure.

After some research, I realize that being wise or having wisdom is not easy to define. It was interesting that certain traits keep popping up: knowledge, insight, belief, and judgement. There was no, however, standard to measure against. A person is wise or they are not. This definition is very problematic and can cause golfers a great deal of trouble when trying to improve their game.

Soliciting ways to improve your golf game from a wise person is a great idea. Yet, how can we be sure that the person we are talking too meets all the criteria of actually having wisdom. Understanding the many complex aspects of golf is challenging for most players, providing the right information at the right time is almost impossible. And maybe that is where real wisdom about golf lies; knowing when to ask the right question, at the right time, from the right person. Maybe the key to enlightenment of wisdom should reside in the person asking for knowledge, not the person providing it.

Asking your buddy who has an ‘on par game’ with you for advice or recommendations may not be very wise. Relating a question to someone like your local pro on ways to improve your game is definitely a step in the right direction. Seeking out that individual who offers the perfect solution to your game is brilliant. Wait, maybe I have stumbled onto the answer to my previous question.

Being wise or having wisdom about golf does not reside with the someone else, but within us. Asking the right questions, at the right time, from the right person is the key to demonstrating and gaining wisdom. It all makes sense now! This, to me, is the secret to golf’s wisdom of the ages! Knowing what to ask, when!

Are you a wise golfer?

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
