The US Open starts today and I am reminded how great the field is at Erin Hills. These professionals are fantastic players with the ability to do amazing things with a golf ball. Over the next four days, the key to winning will rest in the long ball. Hitting the ball long and controlling it will be the deciding factor over the four days of intense pressure.
My comments may seem like an obvious statement, but I am not sure most pundits really grasp why the long ball will be important. I read somewhere that Rory McIlroy hit driver, 3 wood during a practice round to hit the green of the 630+ yard par 5. Averaging 315 yards with each club is ridiculous to say the least. And he is not the longest player in the field.
How can mere mortals compete against such distance. I am sure Dustin Johnson is licking his chops because he can unleash the big dog on most holes and press his advantage as on of the longest hitters on tour. If his short game is anywhere on par with his win at his last Major, he will be tough to beat.
And then there are players like Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth who will be in the mix. Although Spieth is not as long as the others, his short game (if it is hot) will be the equalizer he needs to be in the hunt come Sunday.
Regardless of who you think is going to win this weekend, the X factor will be the long ball. The player who hits the ball long under control will be crowned the US Open Champion in 2017.
What do you think will be the X factor this weekend?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
