Never Say Never When Working On Your Golf Game

In baseball, if you hit the ball 3 times out of 10, you are a great batter. In golf, if this was the case we would have to go back to the drawing board to fix our issues. I have worked on improving my golf game for over 40 years and I still have plenty of room for improvement. If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is to never stop trying and to never think it is time to quit.

I have failed far more times than succeeded in golf. I have felt the depths of despair and the joys of triumph. There is plenty of emotion to go around, however I have learned that regardless of where my game is headed to never give up and to keep moving forward.

Unlike Charlie Brown being convinced time and time again by Lucy to try to kick the football, I am self motivated. This is an important trait for any golfer. Having the drive to try to improve knowing that I will fail more times than not is difficult to foster. Yet, if you look at any great player, they have it in spades. They have that well honed quality of never saying never.

I cannot speak for others, but my quest to improve is rooted in desire and passion for golf. I enjoy all aspects of the game. I appreciate the intricacies and nuances of playing great golf. I cannot always duplicate the actions required to score well, but I have an understanding of what is required. Sometimes it means going back to the practice area and others to play a shot differently. Regardless, I never say never and keep trying to improve.

So, the next time you are discouraged and wonder where your golf game is going, take a moment and a deep breath. This pause might be just the time needed to reset focus and passion as you start your journey anew to lower golf scores.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. After 20+ years of golf and approaching 60, I think it’s safe now to say I will never make the PGA Tour, but that’s as far as I go. My game is still improving, faster than ever as my new neutral grip and other changes become more ingrained and natural, and I plan on continueing that trend. Shooting par or better is on the horizon and thats certainly no time to give up.
