Approximately 2 years ago I predicted Rickie Fowler would have a break out year. Since he has played well and demonstrates sparks of greatness. His recent 61 on the last round of the Hero World Challenge has sparked the conversation all over again. I still believe is one of the top players on the PGA Tour, but I am not sure he is ever going to dominate the tour for a prolonged period.
Shooting 11 under at anytime is fantastic, however shooting in the last round of a tournament is something to talk about. Additionally, starting 7 stokes back and finishing 4 in front of the field is extremely noteworthy. So, with his fantastic finish, the question about Fowler’s 2018 golf season keeps rising to the top. Of course I asked the question and this is what people had to say:
Personally, I am not sure he will win both a tournament and a Major. Actually, I am not sure he is going to win anything else this year. He, like all players on Tour, are streak players and have to play their best to win. It is definitely a possibility, however, I think it is way too soon to jump on the winning bandwagon for Rickie.
What do you think?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
Jim,
Rickie seems to be a bit streaky. When he’s good, he’s really good, and when he sustains that for 4 days he can win any tournament on the schedule. He just doesn’t always keep it going for 4 days, particularly in the majors. I’d be surprised if Rickie didn’t win a tourney in 2018, but I’m skeptical about a major.

Jim, as you note, Rickie is a very streaky player. Can he dominate a tour with so many young studs now? Justin Thomas did with five wins. I don’t think Rickie can approach that as he’s too up and down, but he’s certainly capable of winning a major.
I wouldn’t read too much into the 61. It was a nice round on a fairly easy venue with little pressure. Rickie’s issue has always been Sunday in the big events. It will be fun watching if he can overcome this year.
Thanks,
Brian

I have to agree with your assessment. He is up and down. His challenges on Sunday in big events is definitely an issue, but he does overcome them from time to time. I do hope he does well this year.

Oh I think he can win again. He’s young, enjoys competing and has the right attitude on the course. I know he won this one with a fantastic final day, but the rest of the week he was still better than half the field. And while small, that was an impressive group to compete against. Besides, I spent 20 years playing Cobra clubs, I have to root for him.

Rickie is fun to watch and provides the entertainment value other professionals do not. I think he will win again for sure, but will not dominate for any period of time. To me he is in the lower half of the top tier players. Then again, what do I know, I do not play golf for a living.
