After six months of battling lymphoma, today is the last day of treatment. My stem cells, which were harvested three weeks ago, are finally being infused back into my body. After several treatments of intense chemotherapy, it is time to start the road to recover. I still have a long way to go, but focusing on recovery is a relief. Additionally, I can set a goal of playing golf this fall which will motivate me to stay focused on a healthy recover.
Throughout the past 6 months I received a constant flow of support and well wishes. Many were from close friends and family and yet others were from people I have never met. Many of these virtual strangers are members of the grateful golfer community and yet, some are complete strangers. Every time, I felt uplifted and blessed that someone would take the time to send positive thoughts and encouragement. Needless to say, I am truly grateful!
As I dream about playing golf this year, I understand that my road to the links will be slow and steady. There will be ups and downs, but I plan to take baby steps towards teeing it up.
- First, I will start putting in my basement. This will be a welcomed distraction as regain my strength.
- Second, chipping a bit either in my back yard or at the course (of course putting will be part of the time at the course).
- Thirdly, range time to remind my body how to swing a golf club. I have lost quite a bit of mobility and flexibility, so taking it easy at this stage will be very important.
- Lastly, hitting the course. I do not care if I only play 5 holes, I want to be on the course playing before the end of the season. I think it is a reasonable goal and will keep it in mind as I focus on my recovery.
Most important though will be staying focused on my health. Without this, there is nothing else.
Throughout my entire ordeal, my darling wife, Teri, as supported, carried, kicked my butt, loved and guided me. She is my angel on earth and she is the person I am most grateful for! She is also my greatest cheerleader; she fosters my love of golf and reminds me during the dark times that great times are to come on and off the golf course.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links very soon!
Way to stay after Jim. Happy to read this and love your goals. Also, great to have a fantastic wife, huh?
Stay strong, stay positive and play wonderfully free golf when the time comes. Virtually knowing you, I have a feeling it will be a very grateful day!

My wife is the best. My journey and challenges are lightened because of her for sure. Just need some strength and then back to golf!
