Majority Of Golfers Start Their Warm Up With A….?

If you have 30 minutes to warm up and prepare for your round, what club do you start with to ensure you use this valuable time properly. Do you grab the big dog and let it eat? Or use the flat stick to refine your shoulder movements so you are ready to those pressure putts? Regardless of the club you use, the greatest number of players seem to be like minded and start their warm-up in the same manner. Unfortunately, I am not in the majority on this issue.

60% of golfers start their warm up with their wedges. I guess they find that swinging their scoring irons is the best way to loosen up their body before swinging the larger clubs. I can see how the think this way, but I have a different view on how to best make use of my 30 minutes. Before I get into my side of the story, this is what you said:

I fall into the 21% of golfers who use their irons to start their warm up. Actually, I start with a 7-iron and after hitting 3 balls, I move up to a 5-iron. Then the 4, 6, 8, PW, 9, and finish with my 7 iron. I hit 3 balls between each change. Then, I hit 3 balls with my 3 hybrid, 3 wood, and driver. I finish this portion of my warm up with hitting 3 balls with my 7-iron. Hitting all these balls takes no more than 20 minutes

I finish my warm-up with 10 minutes with my putter. I try to use my star drill and start from close in and work my way out. This way I make the most use of the little time I have on the greens.

After putting, I make my way to the first tee for my and mentally finish preparing for my first shot. I generally warm-up this way and have found it successful over the years. Having said that, I plan to make one change to my warm-up process this year to ensure my game starts off properly.

This year, I plan to make a small change. My last 7-iron will be replaced with the club that I am going to hit off the first tee. This idea was first introduced to me by Brian Penn from All About Golf. I think this is a great idea and is worth trying this season. I will let you know how it goes later in the year.

If you are like me sometimes and run to the tee box out of your car, it takes about 4 holes to warm up…..what a waste of good opportunities! The proper warm-up is very important to prepare for your round of golf. If you have 30 minutes, I suggest you use every minute.

  1. Jim, thanks for the mention. I may mix up my warm up from time to time but keep one thing constant. I always pick a different target on consecutive swings. Also, I’ll reserve the last six balls and play the first hole’s two full shots three times so I’m in the cadence of the game by the time I hit the tee.

  2. It doesn’t matter how much time I have, most of the courses I play regularly don’t have an area to hit a bucket before playing anyway. So with a half an hour before my tee time, I would spend twenty minutes or so with small chips and putting. Most of the other ten minutes will be spent stretching. Then I will want to practice swinging the club I plan on using on the first tee. I do the following whether I have time for any practice or not. I will exaggerate an inside to out path for four or five swings without worrying about anything else, then do about 10 to 15 normal swings starting off slowly and building speed until I’m easily swinging faster than I plan to swing on that first shot. That has pretty much been all I needed to insure I get a good tee shot off. Once I’m off, I will take a couple of practice swings with my eyes closed just to get the picture in my head, then a couple with them open still trying to visualize the shot and that has been a big help with keeping slow starts at bay. Of course it doesn’t work every time, but I’ve found it does work more often than not for me.

    • Thank sounds like a perfect routine for a course without a practice range. I hit balls into a net at my course. It is not the same either, but it helps for sure. I like the idea of swinging with your eyes closed to visualize in your mind what you swing looks like. I will have to try that. Thanks for sharing.
