Senior Men’s Golf Rained Out Again

Well, it is that time of year. Yesterday Senior Men’s day was cancelled due to rain…..again. This week looked to be great fun with a jumble of scrambles mixed between the different pars. We will have to just wait until next week as our registration was pushed until then. Fortunately, I do not have to make up for the lost day as I am playing 3 out of the next 4 days.

The rain was coming down in buckets just prior to the start of Senior Men’s Day.

Like most golfers, I watch the weather very closely. The forecast said that the rain was to stop by 8:30 am; they only missed by 3.5 hours! Unfortunately, this is all part of playing golf this time of year and I will be hit with a few disappointments along the way. I just hope that next time, I do not have my clubs out ready to go before the deluge starts.

After getting over the disappointment, I was suddenly left with 4 hours on my hands and no real plan to spend it. It is important to keep in mind that having a back up plan is important as to not waste the day. In my case, I did some retail therapy and exchanged some work clothes. I arrive home about 4 hours early after all that and decided to putter around in the garage.

The great thing about my house is that there is always something to do. So my plan to use the extra time from cancelled golf was to knock off some ‘to do’ things on my yard work list. Good thing most of my chores can be completed during poor weather.

It is the time of year that I need to be prepared for golf being cancelled. I jus hope it does not happen too often. Do you have a back-up plan to cancelled golf due to poor weather?

  1. Jim, rain outs means work gets done around the house that would normally have to wait. A couple weeks ago I was pulling old caulk off our bathtubs and my wife got roped into the chore to lay a new bead on both tubs. So my rain out affected her day as well.

    I suppose she hopes I play golf at every chance 🙂

  2. That does look a bit wet. Not exactly prime time for a senior tournament. Especially if it’s in the 60’s like you mentioned in yesterday’s article. And I can imagine that makes life a bit difficult for those who have to schedule tournaments.
    Since I only play in one or two tournaments a year, I’ve been pretty lucky and have never had one have to cancel on me. It’s been close once or twice though. But the ones I play in aren’t in the summer. Trying to put one on here in the summer is a crap shoot. It rains at least a little every day. Most days it’s just a single cloud that dumps on you. But it comes complete with tons of lightening so you have to get under cover if you’re caught by one on the course. But it’s generally gone within 20 minutes so we can usually wait them out. But you might see two of those come through during a round sometimes, so it can be annoying.
    My timing, even with two courses and no waiting, has been terrible these past two weeks. I’ve managed to squeeze in 3 nine’s, but that’s it. And those were at the hottest part of the day. Just nine holes had me drenched in sweat. Humidity levels here have been over 90% all day and all night for weeks. But I’d have played more if the storms, and my free time, would have allowed it anyway. I want more time on the green with the new putter, but I must say, it’s working out really well from what little chance I’ve had to use it on the greens. Speed on the longer putts was my big fear but so far, I’m got it more or less right. The one good thing about those 3 nines I played in the heat of the day was I had the course to myself for the most part. I played two balls on every green and hit two tee shots most of the time. It’s my favorite way to practice. Or it will be when it’s not so hot. Maybe by November.
