Using A Jigger To Lower My Golf Score

Playing golf with my hickory sticks is always great fun. It is an exercise in control, nuance and frustration. What a wonderful ride! I am still learning how each club performs, but one club I do have a handle on was my jigger. It is very narrow profile club that I use around the green similar to my 7-iron. It is a club that I think that will lower my golf score quickly as I continue to hone my short hickory stick game.

“Name of an old club with similar loft to a modern 4-iron. Confusingly, it was also sometimes used to describe a short pitching club for work around the green, otherwise called a pitching niblick, or lofting iron, roughly equivalent to a modern pitching wedge.” (allsquaregolf.com)

Over my dozen rounds using hickories this year, I have really adapted well to using my jigger. Generally, I use it within 10 yards of the green in most situations except it the green is very elevated and the pin is short sided. I find if I set my grip like a putter, the ball pops off the face and rolls out exactly as I envision. I love using my 7-iron in my modern set, so using a jigger was no tall leap.

I find it interesting that modern clubs emulate the clubs of old. Virtually all clubs today match the engineering of hickories. Golf has technologically evolved but the style and intent of hickories lives on…..especially in the jigger.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
