Using a Hybrid for Something Different

A hybrid is a very versatile club. Depending on your skill, it can be used for so many different situations that would extricate any golfer out of trouble. I have used my hybrid from 210 yards to 5 yards off the green. I have it out of long grass, short grass, cabbage, from the woods and out of the sand. There are so many uses for my hybrid that I sometimes forget there are other clubs in my bag. 😉 With all the uses of hybrids, I do believe that there is one shot that is often overlooked. But first, how to set up a hybrid.

Of course the above set up is for short shots around the green, but it can also be used as a punch shot out out trouble. Imagine using the above set up with your feet slightly wider than explained. Using the same grip and technique, hit the ball slightly harder. This shot should result in about a 30 to 40 yard stinger. This important rescue shot has saved my game many times.

Taking my medicine and punching out of a tough spot was accomplished by using my hybrid. Most people grab an iron and away they go. In my case, using a hybrid as much as possible does keep my score down and that is the goal!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. A hybrid is one of the last clubs I’ll think about using around the greens but I will fall back on it if I think the situation demands it. There are times when the ball is on an upslope, the grain is against me that it is one of the easier options to insure a good connection. But the same reasons I don’t generally use anything but my wedges around the greens work against the hybrids too. It’s the hot face the hybrids and my irons have.

But just like there are times when I have to chip a 9 iron through a window in the foliage, there are also times I have to choose the hybrid. The shot needed makes the choice so I can’t not practice those shots and find any real faith when I’m forced to hit them.
