Playing golf is a passion of mine. This statement seems pretty obvious considering the name of this golf blog, however every once in a while I play a round of golf that heightens my gratefulness. Yesterday, I played a round at Laurentide Golf Course with my good friend Mike. We played our usual match play game and had a great time throwing jabs at each other for 3.5 hours. We laughed, joked, hit some great shots and some others that did not suit our game. Overall, I am grateful Mike and I were able find time to tee it up.

The 2023 Open Championship With No Surprises
At the midway point of the 2023 Open Championship, I am not surprised at the scores except for one (but that can wait until later in the article). As I watch the players make their rounds, I am impressed by the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The undulations are crazy and if you miss the fairway, watch out! To be fair, after hosting The Open 12 times, I think the course is set up very well and presenting a great test for all the players. Up until now, I do not see any surprises in this years Open.

Playing in a match play event does require a bit of strategy. But when that is starting to fail, what is a golfer to do? When your opponent is playing well and you cannot get traction on the score, how do you overcome the situation. Well, my advice is to just stay the course. It is as simple as playing your game and following the strategy you laid to win the match. This is what happened to me yesterday during the first round of the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort Match Play event.

During my round yesterday I took the time to look around more than normal. The Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort has some picturesque locations and sometimes I forget to take them in when I am looping the course. During my early bird round yesterday, I stopped on the bridge crossing the stream that winds through the course. After taking a deep breath, I looked up and was surprised by the view. I am not sure it is breathtaking, but it sure has a great deal of beauty packed together in one spot.

Every golf course has holes that are easy and others that challenge even the best golf game. Playing many rounds of golf over the years, par 3s have always been a bug bear to my game. If I birdie one or two per round, then I knew great things were going to happen. My goal is to shot par at worst, but that did not always work out. As time progressed, I realized my strategy on par 3s needed to change and surprisingly, it worked!
