Golfing Mafia

How often do you plan a round of golf with friends? For many, they do not like playing with anyone else; it is their friends or nothing. Normally, this staunch approach to golf goes unnoticed by most in the golfing community.

Through the years, I was a member where a cadre of older players who rarely play with anyone but their friends seem to control the comings and goings at the course. Actually, these groups are like a little golfing mafia who set the tone for the entire course. Continue reading →

Using My Favorite Wedge to Lower My Golf Score

I have discussed effectively using my wedges in may posts. However, I am in a bit of a quandary lately, all the wedges are working just great. I have 4 options in my bag every time I chip from within 25 yards of the green. I realize that the situation, location around the green, pin location and hazards will play in my decision. However, if I have a straight shot to the green with no sand traps or hazards in the way, I can choose any of my wedges to execute a successful shot. Continue reading →

FedEx Cup Starts Today

The FedEx Cup starts today. I actually forgot that it was here and I overlooked…well everything!

The FedEx Cup is an interesting golf competition because of the “play well – move on” format. At the Barclays, all 125 players will start, but only 100 players will move on to the next event at the Deutsche Bank Championship. The third week at the BMW championship will only have 70 players competing; then at the TOUR Championship, 30 players will be left to vie for the 10 million dollar grand prize. Hitting the Long Ball in Golf

Amateurs are always in search of the holy grail of distance, but I am not sure any of us have the natural ability to consistently smash the all like Dustin Johnson or Jason Day. I will suggest, however, that amateurs like myself have benefited from the advances in technology to add distance to our game. Continue reading →

Playing Golf With A Caddie

I watch professional golfers manage their way around the course with their faithful sidekick. Caddies have been part of golf since the beginning and they bring an important dimension often overlooked. Much like Batman and Robin, Rocky and Mic, or R2D2 and C3PO – the whole is greater than the individual.

I have never played golf with a caddie so my view is very limited. However, I talked to many friends who have played a round with a caddie and all agree that they played better golf because of the guidance the received from their looper. Although my information is anecdotal, I believe there is value to have a professional caddie during a round of golf. Continue reading →
