What we consider vintage clubs were the top of the line back in 1973. Well, for the most part anyway. “In 1973, Johnny Miller shot a final-round 63 to win the U.S. Open. Miller said, “It was the oldest set of clubs [in relation] to the year it was played on Tour in the history of golf.” A recent tweet from Brian Schneider gave an incredible insight into the clubs in Miller’s bag for that event.” If you think about it, a great swing makes up for what many perceived as poor technology by today’s standards. Well, I am not so sure about that!

Why Hit A Three Wood Off The Tee
I often thought that hitting a 3 wood off the tee was ‘the smart shot’. I was told that it was the safe shot and that it provides a better opportunity for hitting the ball in play off the tee. Apparently, according to Mark Crossfield, this is a misnomer. There is a very slight difference in the ball in play percentage between the 3 wood and driver, yet the distance is fairly significant. So I ask again, why hit the three wood off the tee?

Every golfer knows the highs and lows of playing golf. Regardless of their ability, excitement and disappointment is attached to every shot. It is that one sport where you are in total control of your results and wearing your emotions on your sleeve can be helpful or a detraction. I certainly have felt elation and despair during my many rounds. I am not sure I can control the situations, but I sure can control my reaction to the extreme during events. As amateurs develop their game, controlling our responses to the peaks and valleys of golf is one aspect of becoming a better golfer.

Many golfers struggle with where to aim on a par three. I am not talking about the 200 yard monster that challenges many aspects of our game, but 135 yard hole that is in the wheel house of most golfers. For my game, this distance is a smooth 9 iron. Given the shorter distance, one would think that hitting the ball close would be a no brainer. However, more often than not, golfers tend to miss the green or leave themselves a very long putt. I often wondered about this and I think I have the answer.

Have you ever wondered why so many professionals spend time selecting the right club for every shot? As an amateur, I watch in amazement as the caddie and player talk about all the outside influences that may affect the next shot. Since I do not have a caddie, ever, this conversation is between the voices in my head as I loop the course. Sometimes I over think things, but that is because I understand the possibilities afforded to me through proper club selection. I think that if all amateurs understood what each club did for their game, then they would be able to manage their shot selection with greater success.
