Stepping Back to the Tips in Golf

Many amateurs fear moving to the back tees because of the added distance to every tee and approach shot. Personally, I am not fussed about this aspect of the challenge and relish the opportunity to put stress on my game. So, a few days ago I stepped back to the tips at Osprey Links Golf Course to practice playing longer distances. Unfortunately, my experiment did not go as planned, but it was great fun regardless.

Early Season Focus: Improving My GIR

Early in each year, I like to find an area of my game to focus upon in order to have build the foundation for success. I have to admit, improving my GIR is rooted in last year’s goals and I want to continue to improve lowering my golf scores. Additionally, I have discussed this statistic with Brian Penn from All About Golf and we both agree that increasing our GIR percentage should be at the forefront of most golfers goals. Hence, GIR is my early season focus!

Hitting the perfect approach shot from 50 yards can be a challenge for most amateurs. It is at that strange distance where you could use almost any club to be successful. There is no solid convention on how to make this shot, but I have a theory that might help you decide how to zero on on the flag. It works for me and hopefully will be a benefit to your game.

Remembering The Right Things To Do When Chipping

After chipping 500 golf balls over the last five days, I am finally starting to remember what makes my chipping successful. After clanging, sculling, mishitting, and chili dipping, I am finally starting to feel like I am on the right track. I figure I still have another couple of thousand chips to go, but I am getting there!

If You Don’t Make Mistakes, You Are Not Trying

Over my 40+ years of playing golf, I have made a ton of mistakes. I have tried so many swing fixes that I have forgotten most of them. Interestingly, some of my efforts have paid off because my handicap and gross scores continue to improve. The last five years has been tough because cause of life events and my journey to be a scratch golfer has slowed. Regardless of the roller coaster I sometimes ride, I keep making mistakes that help guide me to eventual success. Making mistakes is all part of the learning process!
