Playoff Golf – Is It A Challenge?

As I write this article, I am waiting for the playoff holes to start at the 2025 Players Championship. Currently, JJ Spaun and Rory McIlroy are preparing to tee it up in a three hole playoff. Given the current world standings and past history, McIlroy should be the odds on favourite. However, I have played in a couple playoff of a golf tournaments where it was sudden death – one I lost and one I won. I used two different approaches that produced two different results. Both were learning experiences and my golf game was better for the opportunities to test my game under pressure.

Hitting A Golf Shot That Works

Every golfer I know has a golf shot that they hit with great consistency. I know I have a few from varying distances which I developed over the years. Each shot does not always fit the shot at hand, but it allows me to hit safely in order to save strokes in the long run. These shots allow me to hit to safe locations at distances within 5 to 10 yards ( plus or minus) of my know distance. It is important to have these shots in our bag if we want to shoot low golf scores on a consistent basis. Do you have a shot or shots that you consider reliable more often than not?

Gripping The Golf Club Properly

The only connection between your body and the golf club is through your grip. Understanding the fundamentals of a good grip is probably the first fundamental every golfer should learn. Over the years, I have tinkered with my grip, but I have always reverted back to my interlocking neutral grip. This particular position works best for my game and as explained by Jack Nicklaus, it is likely best for most players. The challenge for beginners is understanding how to properly grip the golf club in order to maximize their swing. Fortunately, Jack is here to help.

Golf Tips and More Golf Tips

Understanding how to play golf is a challenge for most players. The ‘grip it and rip it’ mentality is king to their approach to lowering their golf score. As we watch the elite players on tour a mindset of trying to hit the ball long creeps into our whole game strategy. I do believe that length offers opportunities for lower scores, but not at the expense of accuracy. There has to be a fine balance between the two regardless of your skill level. Sam Snead (yes, I know I have used his videos a fair bit lately) offers three tips that will help all players shoot lower golf scores. It is a matter of checking our ego and selecting the proper swing/club at the appropriate time.
