Every golfer tries to hit their target. The process to accomplish this fundamental part of golf is the bane of many players. For some reason, they miss their target because of many swing mechanic faults. Of course, we all want to fix these challenges and over time practice is the only real approach to fixing swing errors. In my case, I have a slightly different error that causes me to miss my aim point to the left. It is a fundamental challenge that has become more apparent due to my changes in how I hit my approach shots. I am still working through this primary error and believe I have a way ahead that will help lower my golf scores.

Zeroing In On Your Aim Point In Golf
For many years I have espoused and adopted the ‘aim small miss small’ attituded of lining up a golf shot. This approach to hitting targets applies to all shots regardless of the distance needed. It is something that I have revisited this year as I attempt to improve my GIR percentage. Picking out an aim point is a simple process, but often we amateurs overlook one simple but effective aspect of selecting our target. In my case, I have a three step process that is easy to adopt to any situation. It is simple, easy to replicated and sustainable for my game……hence, a perfect process.

The ability to hit our ball in the direction we select is a fantastic skill to master. Surprisingly, aiming our golf ball is as much about the pre-contact process as much as how we swing the club. I developed my process years ago and it has served me well over my career. I figured out the requirement to have an aim point closer to my ball than a tiny target many yards down the fairway. Of course, that tiny target is important, but closer the aim point, the easier it is to hit my line. Jack Nicklaus has a process that works every time. It is simple, repeatable and requires very little skill to employ. I fully recommend Jack’s process!

Aim your golf shot is a fundamental skill. Like other important traits to a golf shot like grip, stance, and ball position, being able to aim your golf shot properly is critical. There are many different techniques to develop this aiming skill, however I like the analogy of using train tracks for my game. It is simple, easy to understand, and repeatable. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well it is easier than you might think.

Watching the action at Torrey Pines, I am continually struck by the importance of putting from the proper position. I watched many players lip out because they were in the wrong position caused by being on the wrong side of the hole. I realized that many approach shots were made with medium irons and that makes a difficult task for any golfer and Torrey Pines just makes it more challenging. But enough of the difficult conditions at the US Open, the lessons I learned from watching golf this weekend is hitting my approach shot the proper side of the hole is as critical for shooting low scores.
