Hitting The Perfect Wedge Shot

If you regularly shoot over 90 our wedges are used more than any other club except the putter. The reason for this is that we miss the green more than we hit it on approach shots. Not to worry, this errand shot allows for more use of our scoring clubs….our wedges. The ability to hit the perfect wedge shot is a fundamental must for any player seeking lower golf scores. Of course there are many different theories about how to hit the perfect wedge for players to try, however I am a supporter of the fundamentals when hitting our wedges. Keeping that in mind, many players overlook ball position prior to contact because they think that moving the ball around in their stance helps make better wedge shots. This theory, in my opinion, is folly and should be revisited my most amateurs.

Ball Position For Hybrids and Fairway Woods

Do you have a challenge topping the ball with your hybrids or fairway woods? Or perhaps you take a huge divot with the same clubs? I know I had challenges in the past with my ball being too far forward in my stance. To hit the ball, I would have to lean forward to ensure I made relatively solid contact. But that all changed many years back when I realized that I was out balance with my follow through. I was fortunate to figure out my error, but I could have saved a great deal of time if I found this video earlier.

The lesson of ball placement with respect to the bottom of our golf swing keeps smacking me in the face. Surprisingly, I struggle with this skill and execution from time to time. I am not sure why I do, but it is a common fault for most amateurs. The concept is very simple, however making this shot consistently can cause us fits. It seems to be a lesson I continue to learn and relearn. I am confident most amateurs feel the same way, so here is another look at how to determine where to place the ball in relation to the bottom of our golf swing.

Weight Distribution and Putting

Practicing putting indoors is a must in northern climes. With a 5 to 6 month off-season, putting in my basement is very important for a quick start in the spring. Additionally, I found that the extra time I devote to putting allows for a more analytical approach to better ball striking. I try to hit 50 putts each night (which really does not take very long) with a focus on minimizing any extra movements not needed for making a consistent putting stroke. After practicing for a few weeks, I decided to break down my stroke into different segments and focused on just that during each session. Recently, I focused on weight distribution and found out that I was not standing in the optimal position for my swing path. Let me explain.
