Choosing To Chip, Bump and Run or Putt

Is there a definitive answer to any golf question? This seems like a pretty broad question, but it does drill down to the heart of any golf shot. Club selection is critical especially when we are trying to get up and down for par. There are many opportunities to make the proper decision for your game and even more to make poor ones. One of the biggest dilemmas golfers face is whether to chip, bump and run or putt a ball around the green. There are many factors, however I have a decision tree that I use in order to put the right club for the right shot at the right time. It works for me (most of the time) and it helps reduce the possibilities making poor club choices.

Taking A Chance On A Tough Golf Shot

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! Golf is all about decisions. What club to hit; where to land the ball; lay up or go for it; or I can make this low percentage shot! No matter where you are in your round, golf offers you the opportunity to make a plethora of decisions. The real decision you should be making is what shot will lower my score? That is it, there are no other factors to decision making in golf. Each shot is an opportunity to lower our final tally regardless of the outcome of the shot. I say this because execution is completely different that decision making because a poor decision is rarely saved by your ability to hit difficult golf shots. Conversely, a great decision will save you strokes even after a poorly executed shot. Honest it does!

Improving Our Golf Game Today!

“Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow.” – Anonymous

When I read this quote I tried to focus on a specific part of my golf game that would fit these sage words. The challenge I have is that it fits my entire golf game regardless of how I am playing. Basically, the efforts I make today are more valuable than waiting for the perfect time (which is an illusion) in the future to practice or make changes. Regardless of how strong our golf game appears, improvement can only be created by action today. I am not trying to be a philosopher, however this quote applies to life as well.

Thousands Of Decisions On The Golf Course

Every round of golf is riddled with a plethora of decisions. The moment we step out of our vehicle, the decision making process starts and does not finish until we reenter our vehicle. Many decisions have an indirect impact on our game and are made without any real thought. Other decisions, however, have a direct impact on our score because they create a decision chain that can lower our golf score. Interestingly, the decision processes change depending on the format of the golf event. A stroke versus a scramble versus a match play round have very different decision making chains that many golfers do not anticipate.

Assuming In Golf Is A Bad Thing?

For all the amateurs out there, it is time to stop assuming and start knowing about your golf game. That is right, you are your own worse enemy because you think you can hit shots (even basic ones) far more consistently than you actually can and it is hurting your golf score. Okay, my opening was a little harsh for a golf blog that tries to stay positive, but I needed to get your attention. My point about assuming is entirely true and I have fallen into that pitfall myself many a time. As we develop our game, there are the knowns and unknows about our game. Unfortunately amateurs like myself often confuse the two which leads to miss shots, poor decisions, and higher golf scores. All because we assume we know what we are doing when in fact we are walking a tight rope of success.
