Distance or Accuracy Off The Tee

One of golf’s long standing debates is whether distance or accuracy is important off the tee. Depending on the level of a player’s golf skill the answer will vary. I have always been an accuracy advocate because being in play off the tee more often than not has led to many low golf scores. On the days I am shooting around par, I hit the ball straight and relatively long. I was in play with all my shots especially off the tee. Having said this, being able to hit the ball long is important on some courses and having that skill in my bag is very important. Which do you think fits your game the most?

How To Hit The Ball In Play Off The Tee

Hitting the ball in play off the tee needs to be balanced hitting for distance. Recently, I have adjusted my set up with my driver in order to hit the ball a bit farther with a slight draw. This change has not come with its challenges, but mostly when I swing too fast I come over the top and pull the ball farther left than I intend. This wayward shooting happened during the back nine of my round yesterday.

Playing Golf With Long Hitters

The ultimate goal of every golfer is to shoot as low a score as possible. When playing stroke play, the responsibility to play our best golf relies solely on our shoulders. This is a challenge I relish and as I enjoy the pressure of figuring out the best shot for each situation. This situation occurred last Thursday when I was invited to play on my friend’s team of long hitters. I was by far the shortest off the tee and my normal role of anchor was relegated to a different player.

The Reality Of Distance Off The Tee

How often have we discussed the importance of distance off the tee box. The reality of how far we actually hit the ball compared to our ability to post low golf scores. Like all things, many golfers (including myself sometimes) think they can hit a golf ball farther than we really can. Yes, I can poke a ball out to about 280 or 290 once in a blue moon, but my average distance is not anywhere near that length. The key to my last statement is my average distance off the tee. I found some interesting statistics from credible sources that grounds my view of driver distance and shows that my focus on hitting the ball farther might be taking up to much of my focus.
