Putting is the most import stoke in golf. During any round, about half our strokes are eaten by strokes gained on the greens. This is a universal trait and as such should be addressed by every player. The challenge many amateurs have (at least in the early stages of they game) is how to properly hold the putter to gain the most advantage while putting. It is a skill that everyone should work on religiously, but alas many players would rather hit their driver on the range and practice on the putting green. There are so many tips to improve our golf swing it is hard to pick just one. The suggestions here at the Grateful Golfer is designed to offer help to amateurs hoping to improve their game. I am under no illusion that every tip will work for everyone, but I am hoping that the odd tip will help someone at least once. Today’s advice is a combination of pre-shot routine, relieving tension and improving your back swing in under a minute. Sounds too good to be true…..right? Well, maybe not!

If you do not have a pre-shot routine, I strongly recommend that you develop one sooner than later. It is a technique used by every professional golfer, although they vary greatly, to ensure they are prepared to hit their next golf shot. More importantly, developing a pre-shot routine for putting is the most important skill you will create in order to reduce the most strokes. Personally, I have used the same basic pre-shot routine for most of my golfing career and I think it works very well. It has saved me many strokes over the years compared to lost strokes. Initially, when readers think club selection they might thing about the types of golf clubs available to purchase. This is not a bad train of thought if you are looking for something new to help improve your game. Personally, I think buying new equipment is overrated, but that is a discussion for another day. Today, I want to discuss the process related to choose which club to hit when during your round. The cookie cutter approach of focusing on distance only works if you are beginning to play golf, however as your game improves it is only one consideration when selecting a club to hit.
