I bet you are wondering what the heck is going on in the world of golf! I find it interesting to look back our roots to understand how or at least how our modern clubs were developed. My friend Lorne, President of the Golf Historical Society of Canada, is a true historian of golf. He imparts his knowledge about this great sport to anyone who is willing to listen and of course, I am a willing listener. After several discussions with Lorne, I realize that innovation in golf back in the early 1900’s was driven by several factors, but one stands out in my mind: supply and demand!

Improving My Golf Game With Hickory Sticks
Last night I brought out my hickory sticks for the first time in 2024. It was a perfect opportunity to play nine holes with some you players, Alex and Cedar, who have amazing potential. Both are hooked on golf and love to practice as much as play! Looping around the links, we talked plenty of golf. We did not discuss their swing much, but more about how to course manage their round. With me using my hickory sticks, it afforded us an opportunity to discuss potential shots as I was considerably shorter than both of them on every club, but still scored the same at the end. Using my hickories accentuated some swing challenges I was experiencing, but also provided an opportunity to fix my errors…..which I did. Playing with hickory sticks is fun and educational; what a great combination!

A few years back, I was introduced to playing golf with hickory shafted clubs. Thanks to Lorne Emery, President of the Golf Historical Society of Canada, I am hooked on playing these vintage beauties. I enjoy hitting them and having to use different course management strategies in order to shoot well. When I first started swinging the hickories I was challenged because I did not understand the swing I needed to perform to maximize the play of wooden shafted golf clubs. Well, fortunately I do now and it is much easier than I thought.

Spring is just around the corner. This year, the snow is receding faster than in recent years and my hope for an early spring is growing. We will have above average temperatures for the next two weeks and this shift to warmer temperatures should eliminate most of the snow. It is an exciting time for golfers in warmer climes! So, now what? With warmer temperatures on the horizon, I began thinking about what I need to do to prepare for my 2024 golf season.

With golf only a few months off, it is time to start thinking about what comes next. Is this the year I try to lower my handicap, again? Or is it the time to focus on maximizing the fun out of my game. I realize that it will likely be a bit of both, however playing golf with hickory sticks has changed my view on my golf game. Fortunately, I continue to play at a decent level, so my options are wide open. Regardless of the path I chose, I am hoping for my best golf season yet in 2024!
