The plethora of influences on your game is astounding. Depending on the moment, many amateurs can quickly become overwhelmed and lose their confidence to make any shot. Does golf really have to be this way? Continue reading

A Golf Plan To Be A Scratch Golfer in 2016

Good shot or poor shot, Every shot is an opportunityto learn to be a better golfer. One of my life time goals as a golfer is to reach the élite level of being a scratch player. Averaging par 10 games out of 20 is a very difficult feat. There are many challenges each player must face when setting goals and I have found that without a plan of some sort my expectations far exceed what I achieve.

This year, I purposely waited until the beginning of the golf season before implementing my plan to be a scratch golfer. I will follow the same processes as previously stated, but I thought I would update my planning processes and ask for feedback on my way forward.

Lower Your Golf Score by Using the Correct Wedge

Correct WedgeLowering our golf score is the primary goal of most golfers. Everyone likes to talk about how they conquered the course on a particular day, but for some of us those days are rare.  For example, over the past two golf seasons, I recorded 117 rounds of golf at Golf Canada. Although I did not record all my rounds for various reasons, this number is a good sample for our discussion. Of those rounds, 53% or 63 rounds were in the 70s. Of those, 1 was under par, 1 was par, and 4 were 1 over par. So the number of spectacular rounds worth discussing, in my view, is very small.

These numbers may seem impressive but in reality, the consistency of my game is due to two factors, using the correct wedge around the green and consistent putting. I can say that my improved putting is a direct result of playing the ball closer to the pin after an errant approach shot. Choosing the correct wedge around the green is the focus of this article.

Hitting Straight is a miracle.

What is your natural ball flight?

My natural trajectory of a golf ball is straight or a very slight fade. Hitting the ball straight 80% of the time might seem like a gift from heaven, but I can tell you that sometimes I wish could shape the ball. I do work at shaping the ball on the range, but it is not something that comes natural.

If you are wondering about the other 20% of the time, my ball will fade or draw, but it is not controlled. I am not sure why this ball flight randomly decides to show up, but when it does, funky things happen to my game. The 20% randomness is a subject for another blog, for now I want to focus on the 80%! Continue reading

Putting – Line or Speed?

Putting is difficult, easy, rewarding and frustrating all at the same time. This fundamental stroke is the focus of relentless discussion by the experts. How to hold the club; blade or mallet head; fat or thin grip; lag or aggressive; I could to on and on, but I think you get my point. The changing variables of putting are vast and fluid at best. Yet, sometimes a simple tip is all that is required to simplify matters and help lower your golf score! Continue reading
