I played my first match play last week and things did not go as I had hoped. It was a great match and my competitor Rich was fun to get to know. We met up on Monday morning and the course was wet, but the weather was perfect for playing golf. As we walked down to the first tee, we discussed handicaps and as a result; I had to give him 11 strokes.

Leading After 18 Holes
The first round of our 2-day stroke play tournament to make the base golf team is over. The conditions were the toughest of the year with a steady 35 kpm wind and intermittent rain. Before my friends in the UK, Scotland or Ireland start laughing, these conditions are atypical in northern Canada. Regardless, it was a tournament and we were ready to play.

Our Second Shot Needs More Attention

10th hole, Glen Abbey Golf Club

Hitting the second shot is the most diverse part of our game. We can hit a wood, including a driver, long iron, short iron or putter. With all the different options, how can we possibly prepare to make quality second shots. Unlike preparing for our short game, here I can hit the same wedge repeatedly, preparing for any second shot is challenging at best. So where do I look for a solution?

Additionally, there is no one rule that applies to all shots because of the plethora of factors that can affect each shot. Yet, I do have a guideline I use that helps me select the right club to perform the right type of shot. Continue reading

It is time to stop messing around and start lowering my golf score. But where do I start? Do I hit the range and hit bucket after bucket to perfect the perfect swing? Or do I play more golf to hone my course management skills? It is challenging to discover what will make the most impact on our score, but whichever path you decide, be confident with your decision and start moving forward. Continue reading
