WORLD HICKORY GOLF DAY is just around the corner. On May 3, 2026, the Golf Historical Society of Canada will be hosting the World Hickory Golf Day at Cambridge Golf Course. This is an annual event and it is designed to celebrate playing golf with hickory sticks and to introduce players to using wooden shafted golf clubs. I have played this event for many years and I am planning to celebrate this event by playing with my hickory sticks. I year’s past, this is the first round of golf of the year and what a great way to celebrate.
The following is more information about this must attend event if you are in the Cambridge, Ontario, area:
Another World Hickory Golf Day is in the books. It was a huge success with 32 players showing up at the Cambridge Golf Club to mark this momentous day. I saw many old friends, Doug, Allen and Bill to name a few, made some new friends and chatted with many hickory golf enthusiasts. Overall, the World Hickory Golf Day, sponsored by the Golf Historical Society of Canada, was a huge success as great times were had by all!
After a long, long winter of waiting for the temperatures to rise, the day has finally arrived. Well, actually, it is tomorrow, but I am excited to report there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Some of the local courses are starting their season and I can finally take my clubs out of storage because I will need them very soon. I am not golfing tomorrow, but have a game scheduled for Sunday…..a very special day for golf!
Come & Enjoy a day playing hickory-shafted golf clubs on World Hickory Golf Day! Relive the grand moments of George Lyon, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, & Gene Sarazen. Join the fun, as Hickory Golfers collectively around the world will be celebrating the playing of their sport on this same day.

World Hickory Golf Day is great fun! It is an opportunity to play golf the way it was intended. I participated in many previous Hickory events and this one at Cambridge is definitely a must attend.
A few years back, I was introduced to playing golf with hickory shafted clubs. Thanks to Lorne Emery, President of the Golf Historical Society of Canada, I am hooked on playing these vintage beauties. I enjoy hitting them and having to use different course management strategies in order to shoot well. When I first started swinging the hickories I was challenged because I did not understand the swing I needed to perform to maximize the play of wooden shafted golf clubs. Well, fortunately I do now and it is much easier than I thought.
