At the midway point of the 2023 Open Championship, I am not surprised at the scores except for one (but that can wait until later in the article). As I watch the players make their rounds, I am impressed by the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The undulations are crazy and if you miss the fairway, watch out! To be fair, after hosting The Open 12 times, I think the course is set up very well and presenting a great test for all the players. Up until now, I do not see any surprises in this years Open.
The course did force players to make some amazing shots, but the scores demonstrate that except for Brian Harman, all the scores were in the realm of possibility and what I expected. I realize I might be talking crazy, but minus 5 seems like the proper score for The Open. However, Brian Harman is blowing that expectation out of the water. His round of minus 6 was an anomoly to say the least.
The Open is a great Major and the play over the weekend show why it is regarded as a tournament to win.
In case you missed the action:
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
Only Jason Day had more under par holes on the day. He had 6 to Harmon’s 5 and matching Fleetwood’s 6 from yesterday. But one of Harmon’s 5 was an eagle and Day had two bogies to Fleetwood’s 1 which is something that only Harmon managed to avoid in a round among the early contenders I think.
Harmon’s timing is where the anomaly comes in. Going low to days in a row when yesterdays leaders were all faltering gave him is semi-comfortable lead. Semi because the weather won’t stay so nice and that will change things for everyone.
It’s still a game. It’s far from over. Harmon still has plenty of work to do. The rest aren’t going to give it to him for sure.

Kevin,
Harmon has plenty of work to do if he wants to win for sure. Way to early to call a winner. It is going to be fun to watch.
Cheers Jim
