The 2025 Ottawa Hickory Golf Challenge is almost here. This event, organized by Chris Hawes, is raising money for a worthy charity and expanding the fun of hickory stick golf. Chris started this event last year and it was a huge success. My friend Charlie and I participate in last year’s event and walked away with a fantastic golf experience. “Last year’s Ottawa Hickory Challenge was a great success with 64 players registered. This year the momentum has increased and we are hoping for over 100 to join us for the fun two-person scramble on Friday, June 6. The venue is the Manderley on the Green Golf Course in Ottawa, Ont., Canada.”

“We are adding another event this year for the true hickory enthusiasts: a 27-hole stroke play event with 18 holes on Saturday  and nine on Sunday. This makes the Ottawa Hickory Challenge a three-day event and well worth traveling to Ottawa for sights, golf and friendship. There’s a very good exchange rate with the Canadian dollar, so we invite all our U.S. hickory friends to join us for a great time.”

“We had a great contingent from the GHS of Canada last year, who mentored the new-to-hickory players. I am not exaggerating when I say such a fun time was had by all! Chris offered an update a few days ago: “The Tournament is really coming along well and we should have over 120 players for our two- man scramble(already have over 70 registered), and project 40 for the 2-day Stroke Play Tournament with folks coming from Edmonton, Pinehurst NC, Connecticut, Vermont, and of course all over Ontario.”

“The goal is to expose as many folks to Hickory Golf as possible and to maybe attract some regulars and grow the game in Eastern Ontario and raise some momney for the Food Cupboard at the same time.”

Chris and his team have added a new twist to this year’s event. He created a competition that creates regional teams who compete for huge bragging rights and of course a trophy.

Chris states: “Very excited about this: We are having a friendship competition East(Ontario) – West( Alberta) – South (USA). It is an important time to celebrate what is best about Hickory. The friendships, love and respect for the game and each other and enjoyment across many nations. Complete with a WWE style Championship Belt that will travel back and forth over the coming years with the winning teams.”
