For years, the terminology of weight shift dominate golf teaching. It was a term used to describe the movement of force to your trail leg/foot and the transfer of that force to your lead leg/foot. I would suggest that the concept has not really changed, but describing how it occurs has. It is a topic that many amateurs need to understand in order to create power and consistency in their golf swing. Lets delve into this topic more.
The general idea is limit swing and not twisting around a single axis. Our head will remain as still as possible as our body moves in such a manner as to move force through our swing. Take a look at this:
What the video explains is very simple. If you are old school you are likely saying that what is described as a force shift is actually a weight shift. I would agree with that statement as long as there is very little sway in our head during the multitude of swing movements. It is an interesting topic that does need understanding.
The following is a video from 10 years ago. Originally, I was focusing on stance, however it is a good video demonstrating my lack of force transfer from my trail to leading foot. I have worked on this challenge for many years and I think it is better. To be fair, I still have plenty of work left to master this concept.
Force transfer during our golf swing is very important. It helps generate power and consistency. As long as we keep our head still, there is a very good chance that we can master this concept. If you are unsure if you are transferring the force of a golf swing properly, I recommend taking a video such as mine above and critically watch your movements. You might be surprised at the results.
