Golf is a game where an inch here or there makes all the difference. As a golfer, we call these lucky or unlucky bounces. They can bring elation or despair depending on the results. It is impossible for me to count the number of wayward shots that resulted in positive results and, conversely, the same for negative results. Call it karma, divine intervention or a fluke, these bounces are a part of golf. And yesterday on the 9th hole at Osprey Links Golf Course is a perfect example of what I am talking about. Do You Use All Your Wedges or Just Carry Them?
The rules of golf allow each player to carry 14 clubs. Because of this limitation, selecting the right clubs for my game is critical to low golf scores. Repeatedly, I have espoused that my short game is where my scoring resides and I believe that is the same for everyone. Therefore, years ago, I chose to take out my 5 wood and replace it with a 60º gap wedge. It is a decision I do not regret. This resulted in carrying 4 wedges when I play, but more importantly, I consistently use all 4 wedges. Do you? Continue reading
A Great Day on the Golf Course

Blair Pulling into the Osprey Links Golf Course parking lot.
Yesterday I hit the links for only the fifth time this year. As many of you know, my medical woes have severely limited my ability play, but I am grateful I have played this much. Blair and I got off to a rocky start around a half hour late thanks to some confusing texts. This was the worst thing that happened all day, so in the end, it was a very good day. After we loaded his clubs on the cart, we were off to the races. Continue reading
Throwing Caution To The Wind

Kirk making an amazing shot out of a tough spot!
While playing golf, throwing caution to the wind is never a good strategy. Navigating the links takes thought and meticulous observation of the course conditions to score well. From the first time I tee it up to my final stroke, I zero in on the shot at hand. I stay focused for 4 hours and, in the end, I feel a sense of accomplishment that I achieved all my goals and left nothing on the course… Okay, wake up and grab your coffee! Of course, we all want the above to happen, yet it happens rarely. Now, for the real story! Continue reading
Miss-Hitting My Tee Shot
Of all the shots in golf I hate miss-hitting, the one I hate the most has to be my tee shot. If you think about it, I set up the conditions and generally have an open landing area. So, why would I have trouble hitting off the tee? I am not sure about your game but if I am to miss, it is usually a pull to the left side of the fairway. Most of the time I get away with my miss-hit, but from time to time I find trouble and have to play a Seve-like shot to prevent a high score. Such is the nature of my game. Continue reading
