The Golf Ball and Bifurcation – Update

In November of 2017, I first addressed the discussion of golf ball and bifurcation. The question was originally asked to me by Darwin Howard, Superintendent of Seguin Valley Golf Club, and at that time I was for it. I thought that limiting the distance professional golfers can hit a ball would be good for golf. Now, I am not so sure!

Before we go further, bifurcation is defined as the point or area at which something divides into two branches or parts. The main concern is that by changing the specifications on a golf ball for professionals, two sets of rules will be develop further separating professionals (and high-ranking amateurs) from the regular player. The professional golf world is abuzz with talk about the return of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy for 2020. I have read numerous tweets and articles asking how well these two superstars will fare over the next 9 months. The focus is mostly on Tiger, but Rory is popping up here and there. Unfortunately, it is way to early to focus on their success because winning a golf tournament is really no big deal. And here is why!

Tiger Woods – Still a Superstar?

First, congratulations to Tiger Woods for matching Sam Snead’s 82 professional win record. It was a fantastic accomplishment that many players expected (or at least hoped) he would match before he hung up the sticks. Given his resurgence to the top of the leaderboard, he will likely exceed this feat in the next year or two. However, I was wondering if his continued winning ways garners the status as Superstar as it once did? Does Tiger Woods outshine the young stars or professional golf?

Rory McIlroy vs Tiger Woods – Was it Worth the Hype?

A long awaited head to head match between Rory McIlroy vs Tiger Woods happened yesterday at the Dell Technologies Match Play event at the Austin Country Club. Each made it out of their respective pools, but Rory was the more dominate of the players. His strong play has this season indicated that he was the favorite, but he was playing Tiger Woods. Therefore, nothing was certain or predictable in the lose a go home rounds.
