If you regularly shoot over 90 our wedges are used more than any other club except the putter. The reason for this is that we miss the green more than we hit it on approach shots. Not to worry, this errand shot allows for more use of our scoring clubs….our wedges. The ability to hit the perfect wedge shot is a fundamental must for any player seeking lower golf scores. Of course there are many different theories about how to hit the perfect wedge for players to try, however I am a supporter of the fundamentals when hitting our wedges. Keeping that in mind, many players overlook ball position prior to contact because they think that moving the ball around in their stance helps make better wedge shots. This theory, in my opinion, is folly and should be revisited my most amateurs.

When playing golf are there shots that cause you anxiety? Is there a situation you hate to find yourself because success seems impossible. How about putting that three foot downhill breaker for par, does that cause you angst? The emotional responses to all of these challenges are rooted in one thing: FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real. When shoots that increase the pressure on our ability to perform arise, I had a tendency to think of all the wrong possible outcomes. Yup, I was so focused on missing, I actually forgot to believe that I could make the shot….is that not the definition of crazy for any golfer!

I know several of the Ambassadors who, I am sure, were in their glory talking about the historical aspects of golf. I was note able to attend this year, but I figured it was a good idea to share their experiences.

I am not sure why many fans of golf originally gravitated towards the sport. I am confident that what ever reason brought someone over is as unique as a snowflake. In the modern day of social media, instant news, and a constant barrage of useless information, creating drama seems to be quickly becoming a method to garner interest (regardless of how fleeting) It seems that controversy sells and positive deeds are overlooked in many cases. As a person who reads and writes about about golf, I am not sure that the path fame in the golfing world is paved by constantly talking about contentious topics. Does creating drama actually draw new viewers to golf or does it turn off the people who are already tuned in?

For many years my golf goals centered around lowering my scores be addressing challenges in my game. This approach has served me well because my game has stayed sharp with some minor improvements. This year, I will continue my proven path, however it is time to adjust my vector just a bit. Recently, I have agreed to become more involved with the Golf Historical Society of Canada (GHSC) by becoming a contact person for promoting historical golf in my area. My involvement will be setting up a few golf days were the more experience members of the the GHSC can travel my area and showcase hickory shaft golf clubs and some ‘classic steel’ golf clubs. The entire venture is to increase interest in the historical and fun aspects of vintage golf. I am starting to formulate an plan, but it will include a stop at the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort (my home course).
