As the game of golf evolves, the “next step” has a tendency to force an adjustment in thinking. Over my 40+ years of playing, I have watched the golfing world adopt precision, control, grip it and rip it, and now brute strength as the main stream philosophy. Most of the this change is driven by innovation of equipment and technique. But, I wonder if the present day philosophy is more about selling golf versus improving the actual game. This is a tough nut to crack, but I have my views for sure.

Recently my cousin reached out to asked me about what clubs he should have in is bag. He has an assortment of clubs and they range from driver to pitching wedge. He was wondering which clubs to carry and to stay within the 14 club rule. I gave him a call and we talked about how much he played and the cost/value if he should purchase any new equipment. It was a very good conversation and it made me realize that the composition of each bag should be different to match the players game.

I have read many articles about choking down on a golf club to adjust distances to the green. This maneuver is often used in the professional rank and players who understand their normal yardages. I suppose it could be used by us regular players, but I think that just moving our hands without understanding what the results will be to the your ball’s distance and flight.

Located on the Kent coastline, the Sandwich links will showcase the world’s best players as they compete for the Claret Jug in The 149th Open.” (The Open) Royal St George is a tough track and will test the nerves of all the players, especially the leaders, throughout the four days of competition. The Claret Jug will definitely be earned this year!

During every golf season, I always have challenges with some aspect of my golf swing that I did not expect. This year my woes are surfacing where I feel like I am hitting the heel of my irons first causing my club face to close. As such, my approach shots end up left of the green. This fixable miss is something that happens a few times a round, but not all the time. I sat down last night and went through the mechanics of my swing and I thing I found out what I am doing wrong. Now it is time to fix it!
