Earlier in the week I posted about taking stats on my next round of golf. Although one round does not provide enough data to make any solid decisions on where I need to practice, the one round I played did provide some possible focus as to where I need work. With such a short season, it is a challenge to be patience with such a short golf season, but I do know that everything takes time. With a small sample set, this is where I realize I need the most work.

An Important Approach Shot Tip For All Golfers
Approach shots are the bane of most golfers golf scores. Some times we do not pick the proper club to fly the ball to the green and others we just aim poorly. The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is the strategy of always pin hunting regardless of the length of the approach shot. Most of us are not very accurate from a distance, yet we still think it is a good idea to hunt for a tight sided pin in the hopes of making a miracle shot. Unfortunately, hoping in golf tends to lead to disaster. The solution to this dilemma is to aim for the center of the green……if our ego allows this decision.

Golfers play in different course conditions routinely throughout their season. Some days it is wet, cold, windy, dry, lush, and rock hard to name a few. As we try to conquer the varying conditions it is important to be able to hit different types of golf shots. Yes, this does mean we need to practice at the range to manage our swing movements. As I perused different topics to chat about, I found a tip by Mark Crossfield that was made for certain conditions, but in fact is a universal golf tip that all players should master. Regardless of your skill, every player should know and understand the simple elements of their golf swing. This statement really does not mean much to many players because they do not know what they do not know. I realize I am contradicting myself because how do we know something about our golf swing if we have never been exposed to the knowledge. While searching for a topic to address today, I found a video that talks about three basic aspects of approach shots that I think need repeating. I say repeating because I have discussed the times in one form or another. The knowledge is worth repeating and Michele Low does a great job pointing them out.

Hitting the ball on the green in regulation is the goal of every golfer. To accomplish this task, we think we need to be as close to the green as possible in order to make an easier approach shot. After years of trying different distances, I am not sure this is the case. For my game, I have a dead zone where I absolutely try to avoid as much as possible. It is that distance where my success rate of hitting the green diminishes because I have to manufacture a shot. I often wonder why players do not hit to a distance that works so they can create a natural, somewhat full swing. Well, the short answer is our lack of knowledge and understanding of what approach shots works best for our game. This challenge is a quick fix and one that every player can achieve the next time they step on to the links.
