Tony Dear: Ode to Arnold Palmer

An Englishman pays tribute to the American giant, and thanks him for revitalizing the Open Championship.

He didn’t like the label. “There’s no king in golf,” he said. “Certainly not me.” But how could you not call Arnold Palmer the King?

Everything about the man set him apart from his contemporaries and the generations of golfers that came after him, and who owe him a huge debt of gratitude, if not a king’s ransom. In terms of stature, prominence, and importance, Palmer wasn’t ‘one of the…’. He was simply ‘the…’.

But he wasn’t a tyrannical ruler, of course – not the sort to perch himself above all else, expect better treatment, or treat others as subordinates. He appreciated others, recognizing that his immense wealth and success gave him the opportunity to benefit those near him, as well as people he’d never meet……..

The 2016 Ryder Cup – Advice

It is difficult to imagine what is going through the mind of the players preparing for the Ryder Cup. Each will have their own methods of preparing for the most famous team competition in golf! Regardless of how they prepare, it is important that on Friday morning, they bring their A game.

Reading many articles on the Ryder Cup, I can honestly say that there is plenty of ‘white noise’ that might be a distraction to the competitors. Keeping the players focused is the heavy task of the Team Captain and the Vice Captains. Chosen for their experience and understanding of what the players are going through, they will likely offer sage advice, however it is ultimately the job of the players to step up and play well.

The Masters Update

The Masters is two days away! Tomorrow is the par 3 tournament, then let the games begin. The Masters is my favorite Major and over the past few weeks, we have discussed how players qualify, who we picked to be champion, and other aspects of fantastic golf tournament.

Main stream media has most of the news covered at nauseum, so I plan to stay away from most of those topics. As The Masters approaches, there are some news articles that caught my attention.
