The ability of any golfer is limited in a moment in time. Regardless of your skills, when faced with a difficult golf shot most amateurs (myself included from time to time) look at shots that is not in their arsenal. During my two tournament victories last week, I was faced with this exact situation multiple times and each time I decided on the conservative approach to shot making. In all instances but one, I made par. The other was a bogey to half a hole. When playing in an event where every stroke matters, overreaching is a mental failure that most amateur golfers experience to the detriment of their score.

Walking Improves My Golf Game
Fitness is a very important component of successful golf. Having the ability to walk 18 holes with enough gas left in the tank to perform is something every golfer should be capable of accomplishing. Of course there are always exceptions and it is not my intent to shine a negative light on other golfers; I am only talking about my golf game. If given a choice, I will walk most golf courses. There are some I have played that walking is not wise due to its design, however 95% of golf courses are walkable and I enjoy taking the stroll. Other than the physical benefits of walking a golf course, the mental benefits are often overlooked. I play better golf when I walk and here is why!

Every round of golf has the potential to result in a fantastic score. Regardless of the course, every player can visualize shooting a score they can be proud of while kibitzing at the 19th hole. It is a matter of developing a strategy, focusing on each swing, reacting the results and remaining positive when the round falls off the rails. This process is normal, universal, and subject to failure when we start poking holes in our agreed upon strategy. Everything is going great until a fatal shot and then we re-strategize and throw everything out the window. Truly a recipe for disaster!

Course management is a must have for every golfer. This mental approach to golf (as course management is all mental) allows players to loop a course without exacerbating the difficulties of each round. It might seem daunting, but in reality course management is an easy process that helps all levels of golfers accentuate their strengths during every golf shot. There is a cerebral process to golf and it manifests through course management. Therefore, I recommend that learning about course management and what it means to your game is a must.
