Common Sense Approach To More GIR

Greens in regulation (GIR) is the one stat that every golfer should understand. Hitting the green with a chance to putt for birdie more often than not will lead to lower golf scores. The challenge that most amateurs use the wrong approach to improve their GIR. They allow their ego determine club selection instead of the six inches of real estate between their ears. Under clubbing on approach shots is the number one strategy error made by amateurs. Well, today we are going to fix that challenge!

Not Following Through With Your Golf Resolution

I purposely wait for some time before talking about our 2023 golf resolutions. The reason for my delay is to give everyone a chance to re-evaluate their golf resolutions because if they are like all my resolutions in the past, they are broken by now. 🙂 I do not make resolutions because I believe that taking steps to improve my daily life and golf game is a year long process that requires constant attention. Maybe attention is the wrong word and focus or intent. Making a statement of finality that requires immediate action seems like a great idea, but I have rarely been successful making resolutions; golf or otherwise. To take this one step further, I do not make golf resolutions, I make golf plans and try execute it as best possible.

How To Hit More Greens With Your Approach Shots

Greens in regulation (GIR) is the the one stat that I tops all others. Of course the challenge of achieving a high GIR percentage is something I try to work at most of the time. It sets up great scores and helps build confidence in your ball striking. For example, yesterday during my round I shot my season high of 14 greens in regulation (78%). This GIR percentage helped me comfortably loop the round without any fear hitting a poor shot. It was a great day and my success makes me think about what went right.
