Recently, I attended the 2022 Fall Hickory Classic hosted my the Golf Historical Society of Canada. This two day event was designed to bring together like minded golfers who have an affinity for delving into the roots of golf. Dressing up in old style garb, using hickory shafted clubs, and playing challenging courses were only a few of the fun aspects of my weekend. Overall, it was a resounding success and I want to thank Allan Lew, GHSC/Hickory Ambassador/ Fall Tourney Event Co-ordinator, for the fantastic event he hosted on behalf of the GHSC. His continuous efforts resulted in a must attend event for us novice hickory stickers in the future.

What Drives You To Play Golf
Over the years, my desire to play golf has waxed and waned. Depending on the stage of my game I was experiencing, the drive or desire to play golf was minimal or overpowering. As I enter the back nine of my career, I find that different things drive me to play golf. Of course, throughout all of my hills and valleys of my game, I remain grateful that I can play. Golf is a big part of my personal life and through it I remain centered with a perspective of what is important. Recently, I have notice my golf journey is taking a new path that is leading me backwards (historically) to the evolving roots of the my passion. I am not 100% sure what direction it will finally lead, but I am going to enjoy the ride.

For the third time in four years, the Golf Historical Society of Canada offered the opportunity to play a round of golf using hickory shaft golf clubs (hickories) at Osprey Links. As per previous years, I was teamed with Lorne Emery, GHSC Secretary and Ambassador. Lorne entertained our group for 18 holes with historical information about the creation of specific clubs, their origin and who played them. Additionally, he kept us laughing with funny tales about golf through personal stories. This event is definitely a highlight of my golf season and I am already looking forward to next year.

For the second year in a row, I was invited to play a round of golf by Bill Vossen. This invite was nothing out of the ordinary except our round was to be played with a set of hickory shaft clubs! The Golf Historical Society of Canada was hosting a few members at Osprey Links Golf Course to expose modern day players to a round of golf using equipment technology from the late 1800s and early 1900s. I have to say it that even though it was my second time using these amazing clubs, I found that the experience invigorated my golf game.
