Watching Golf on TV

It is cold and snowy outside. I plan on doing something in the crisp cool temperatures later, but right now while I am writing this article, I am also watching  golf on TV.

I am watching Hideki Matsuyama work his way around in the final round of the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. It was interesting to watch Hideki and others make some amazing shots shot in the mid 60s for their final round. What was more interesting was the analysis by the Morning Drive crew on the Golf Channel. Continue reading

Training for A Great Golf Swing

Over the years, fitness was discussed multiple times at The Grateful Golfer. It is an extremely important part of being a successful golfer, not to mention a healthy lifestyle. Normally, I am an active person, but when the snow starts to fly, it becomes difficult to maintain an active lifestyle.

I am not an expert, nor do have the knowledge to guide anyone who wants to train for a great golf swing. I only know what works for me and what I need to do to be successful on and off the golf course. Do you know what fitness components are important to your golf swing? Continue reading

Trying Too Hard in Golf

Is there such a thing as trying too hard when playing a sport? Most coaches demand 110% effort from their players (although I never understood that saying)! As a coach of many sports, I expected the players to give their best effort for that day! Sometimes, it exceeded their average effort, other times they needed some motivational encouragement.

Golf is a different kettle of fish. Most amateurs, including myself, don’t really have that second gear to ‘step up’ our game. Unlike soccer, football, hockey, or rugby, golf is a sport where maintaining a constant effort wins the day. Golf is about control and focus for two seconds followed by minutes of patience and waiting. Unfortunately for most players, it is the two seconds of maximum effort that causes the problem in their game!

Fixing Your Golf Swing or Not!

Every player has a unique golf swing. It belongs to us and only us. It does not matter if we try to emulate Ben Hogan or Bobby Jones’ swing, our physical attributes ensure that when the club is in motion, it is one of a kind. Having said that, fixing ‘your golf swing’ is just as unique because any change must suited to your distinctive swing.

Yet, I ask you; when your golfing woes plague you (or at least you thing so) do you rush for a fix? Do you over think the possible challenges and grasp at any solution? If so, then I think it might be time for you to reevaluate your approach and take a deep calming breath. You solution is here! Continue reading

Different Golf Swings – Pt2

Last night during my indoor golf league at Rhino Sports, I realized that a different golf swing is required for different course conditions. It was strange, but I had to adjust my swing to fit the hard playing surface of the indoor simulator to get distance with my clubs!

Normally, I trap the ball as seen in the video below. I have found that trapping the ball offers more distance and better control with my irons. However, this style of swing does not fit my woods or hybrids; so like many players I play a more of a sweeping swing with them. Continue reading
