Hickory Stick Tour Comes to The North

This Friday and Saturday, the Golf Historical Society of Canada (GHSC) is making is annual Northern Hickory Tour to North Bay and Mattawa. Spearheaded by GHSC president, Lorne Emery, this will be the fourth year that the hickory sticks will be playing in the area. The intent of this tour is to promote the history of golf through playing with vintage equipment. This will be my third year participating in this fantastic event and I am thrilled to host a stop at the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort on Saturday.

Northern Hickory Tour
This is a 4-day hickory extravaganza in Northern Ontario and involves three different golf courses, as follows:

  • Thursday, August 24 early afternoon – Couchiching GC (Orillia)
  • Friday, August 25 noon – Osprey Links – Callander)
  • Saturday, August 26 noon– Mattawa GC (Mattawa)

This is the third time the hickory tour is being organized and a few spots are still available. Southern Ontario players should contact Lorne Emery, GHSC President, by email at lorne.emery9945@gmail.com if you want to be added to one, two or all three rounds. Bill Vossen (vossenb69@hotmail.com) and Jim Burton (“The Grateful Golfer“) is the GHSC Hickory Ambassador from North Bay coordinating this event.

I am looking forward to playing two days of hickory golf this year. The Northern Hickory Tour is a great way to promote the history of golf and seeing some old friends with the same interests is really the big prize!

Learning New Concepts While Using Hickory Shaft Golf Clubs

The saying that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks is simply not true. If we are openminded and focused on what is happening in the present, our golf game can improve through focused observation. This was the case yesterday when I played a round with my hickory sticks. It was the first time this year I used these beauties outside of a Golf Historical Society of Canada (GHSC) sponsored hickory event. It was great fun and learned many lessons about my game.

World Hickory Golf Day Is Coming!

The Golf Historical Society of Canada is hosting an awesome annual event. I am planning to attend at this time, but need to work out a couple challenges. If you are interested, see the flyer below.

Playing golf with hickory shafted clubs is always a great fun. I have not swung my modern clubs yet, but I hope to before heading down for this event.

Johnny Miller and Vintage Golf Clubs

What we consider vintage clubs were the top of the line back in 1973. Well, for the most part anyway. “In 1973, Johnny Miller shot a final-round 63 to win the U.S. Open. Miller said, “It was the oldest set of clubs [in relation] to the year it was played on Tour in the history of golf.” A recent tweet from Brian Schneider gave an incredible insight into the clubs in Miller’s bag for that event.” If you think about it, a great swing makes up for what many perceived as poor technology by today’s standards. Well, I am not so sure about that!

Two Vintage Must Attend Golf Events Are Quickly Approaching

The Vintage Golf Collectibles Sale and Trade Show is quickly coming. Hosted by the Golf Historical Society of Canada, this trade show looks to be a must attend event. The interesting thing about this event is that it is taking place at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame at the Glen Abby Golf Club. If you are interested in vintage clubs, hearing fantastic stories from the Historical Societies president, Lorne Emery, or just browsing for some new/old clubs then the trade show is the place to be.

Additionally, the World Hickory Golf Day is quickly approaching. If you want to play in event hosted by the Golf Historical Society of Canada, then see the flyer below. I have played in an hickory event and it is great fun. If you are able, I recommend you attend this fun golf tournament.
