How To Hit More Greens With Your Approach Shots

Greens in regulation (GIR) is the the one stat that I tops all others. Of course the challenge of achieving a high GIR percentage is something I try to work at most of the time. It sets up great scores and helps build confidence in your ball striking. For example, yesterday during my round I shot my season high of 14 greens in regulation (78%). This GIR percentage helped me comfortably loop the round without any fear hitting a poor shot. It was a great day and my success makes me think about what went right.

Putting Golf Clubs In the Penalty Box

Yesterday, I played a good round of golf, yet did not score well. I finished with a 79 and felt that I could have scored a great deal lower. I started off worse than normal, but after a few breakfast balls 😉 we started our round. Running to the first tee after 5 days of house renos left me a little tight, but I quickly loosened up. Golfing Without A Care In The World

If you are a serious golfer, most of your rounds are calculated and designed to meet your strengths. I know I definitely focus my efforts on the shots I know I can make and react to situations with shots I know are the best percentage. As a lower handicapper, this approach would be considered routine. My current style of play was honed over years of playing golf with the intent of lowering my scores. Of course all my actions may have limited my game, but overall I do not think so because I feel that my overall game continues to improve. My approach does have some limitations and once my game plateaus or enters a rut, I try to shake my game up by playing golf without care in the world.
