Ask any golfer and they will tell you that the hardest shot in golf is one you have to perform. As amateurs, this type of pressure can sometimes cause us fits because we do not always feel the confidence to be successful. Playing golf under pressure, regardless of the level, is something that all players must develop in order to succeed. Shooting consistently low golf scores is something that low handicap golfers, like myself, strife for and playing under pressure is a must. So, the obvious question is how?

Worrying To Much About The Score
Almost all golfers use their score as a benchmark to how they played on any given round. I am no different and sometimes I get so wrapped up in shooting a low score, this goal gets in the way of playing well. This might sound foolish to some, yet focusing on my score has led me down the wrong path for proper swing thoughts. It is as if I was so concerned about shooting a low score, I neglected to use the processes that lead a great round.

With the start of my golf season yesterday, the lessons I learned from the 2021 Masters will easily be applied to my golf game. There was not magic shot that made me want to reevaluate my game, but more of lessons that will apply to every golfer regardless of skill. These lessons will not force you to change your swing mechanics, but more on how we approach our game for a mental stand point. I think the final round of the 2021 Masters demonstrated the many mental aspects of golf I espouse and will continue to discuss.

As I watch the games during ‘March Madness’, I am often struck at how one shot seems to change the momentum of a game. I know from my years of competing in various sports that one shot sometimes makes a tremendous difference in the outcome of a game. And, I bet you are wondering if one shot makes a difference in golf. I would suggest that it does; actually one shot could turn the tide of your entire round.

Owning our golf shot is one of the most difficult aspects of playing. We keep score and because of this do not always take ownership of our score. Golfers will forever blame as many outside influences to their poor luck as possible. I have done this in the past, but rarely do I do now; I generally react to a poor result with some frustration, but do not blame anyone but myself. Of course, I do not mind pointing fingers at my playing partners from time to time, but that is for fun than anything else. 🙂
