With the start of my golf season yesterday, the lessons I learned from the 2021 Masters will easily be applied to my golf game. There was not magic shot that made me want to reevaluate my game, but more of lessons that will apply to every golfer regardless of skill. These lessons will not force you to change your swing mechanics, but more on how we approach our game for a mental stand point. I think the final round of the 2021 Masters demonstrated the many mental aspects of golf I espouse and will continue to discuss.

What Is Your Biggest Worry On The Golf Course
In my earlier years, I was wracked with worry when I teed it up! If I entered into a competition (friendly or serious) forget it; I would seize up for a hole or two until I hit a few good balls and had time to relax. Of course as time progressed and my game improved, I started to worry less and less. This does not mean that I do not have any worries, but any fears about my general game is overruled by my mental game.

I know my limitations and expectations when playing golf. These important mindsets were honed over years of playing well and poorly. Because I feel I have a handle on what shots I can comfortably make, I sometimes disregard the right shot for an easier shot. For some reason my mind wanders into the “I can never make that shot” zone instead of looking at all the variables and choosing the shot that needs to be made. I really dislike it when my mind wanders and I become disappointed at my mental weakness. But what is a golfer to do?!

Golf is a game of decisions. The development of a good decision process leads to a strong course management capability. They do go hand in hand and are not mutually exclusive. They have to compliment each other to lower your handicap and shot your best scores. Unfortunately, many of us, myself included, deviate from the process and jump to conclusions that cause us no end of grief. It really is a frustrating time when I venture down the path poor decisions, especially if I compound one bad decision with another.
