The Open Day 2: No Surprises

Day 2 at The Open Championship went pretty much according to most pundits expectations. The weather and wind were big factors for the lower scores and except for a couple of players -3 was a great score. The number of players under par dropped to 27 and the lead by Phil Mickelson narrowed.

The Big 3 all made the cut, but will have to play well on moving day to be in contention on Sunday. If the scores of the Big 3 continue the current 2 day trend, then Pete Robbins, from White Dragon Golf, prediction at none of the Big 3 will win a Major this year still holds true.

After looking at the scores, I will give Day 2 to Royal Troon; most of the field was trooned, but tomorrow is another day! The following are some Day 2 highlights from Twitter that I think you might find interesting! Continue reading

The Open: Troon Got Trooned

Troon got Trooned! This phrase, coined by Brian Penn at All About Golf, fits The first day of The Open! Of course everyone is talking about Phil Mickelson’s 63 and 3 shot lead; I for one am happy for Lefty, but unfortunately I did not predict such a strong start for this veteran or any of the current leaders. As some pundits are saying that this is only the first day and tomorrow thinks might be different.

The low scores are quite amazing considering the reputation of Royal Troon. Discounting Mickelson’s score, there is still 1/3 of the field under par; for a Major! 11 players were minus 4 or minus 5! That is an amazing number of players who Trooned Troon. Continue reading

2016 US Open Picks

The US Open has a tradition of being the most challenging Major. This year, Oakmont Golf Course will help uphold this tradition and perhaps vex most of the field in the process! In 2007, Tiger Woods commented that “That golf course is going to be one of the toughest tests that we’ve ever played in a U.S. Open, especially if it’s dry, it will be unreal because those greens are so severe.” This year should be no different!

Picking a winner at this year’s US Open is challenging and complex. The number of variables would challenge Albert Einstein, however, sometimes keeping it simple is the best solution!

Nine Days Until The Masters

Chipping Phil MickelsonWhat makes The Masters more than just a golf tournament!?  Is it that Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus are the youngest first time and two-time champions respectively!?  Is it that Jack Nicklaus has won 6 green jackets!?  Is it because in 1935 Gene Sarazen’s double eagle on 15th hole coined “the shot heard ‘round the world”!? There are only four wire-to-wire champions. Is it that the oldest Masters champion is golf’s great Jack Nicklaus at age 46?  Phil Mickelson’s shot from behind a tree on the 13th hole to 5 feet from the pin. Regardless of the event, it is easy to see why this tournament captures the eye of the golfing world, as millions of viewers will be glued to the TV waiting for history to unfold!

The Masters is just around the corner. The excitement is building and most golfing fanatics are slowly counting the seconds tick away. This is a yearly tradition for most players as the first Major of the year marks the start of the golf season, especially those of us in the northern climes!

How to Lower Your Golf Score

How to lower your golf score is a claim by most golf “experts”. Everyone has a plan, technique, process, or training aid that will quickly lower your score. Of all the claims, there is one fundamental step that every player has to take to achieve any kind of success. It is nothing complicated, yet without it, very little gains can be made to lower your golf score.

At The Grateful Golfer, I make recommendations on areas that I think will help your game. I make no promises, nor do I believe that each tip will help every golfer. There are so many variables, that I am not sure there is a one tip fix for any game. So how do we lower our golf score to become a better the golfer? Continue reading
