2016 US Open Picks

The US Open has a tradition of being the most challenging Major. This year, Oakmont Golf Course will help uphold this tradition and perhaps vex most of the field in the process! In 2007, Tiger Woods commented that “That golf course is going to be one of the toughest tests that we’ve ever played in a U.S. Open, especially if it’s dry, it will be unreal because those greens are so severe.” This year should be no different!

Picking a winner at this year’s US Open is challenging and complex. The number of variables would challenge Albert Einstein, however, sometimes keeping it simple is the best solution!

Rickie Fowler: Rising to the Top of Golf

Rickie Fowler is a rising star. He is a hungry lion who is proving that the young players on the PGA Tour are here to stay. After turning pro in 2009 at the age of 21, Fowler has steadily improved his standing within the professional ranks. Since the moment he emerged on tour, he has been touted as one of the future stars of golf.

Exactly one year ago, I predicted that Rickie Fowler would have a breakout year in 2015. His steady improvement over his first 5 years of professional golf was a great indicator that Fowler’s time had arrived. However, many pundits and critics suggested that Fowler was on over-rated player who did not meet the hype ‘they’ built early in Fowler’s career.

In 2015, Fowler finished with 2 wins, 1 second, 1 third and 7 to 10s. He won the Players Championship, the Deutsche Bank Championship, and, most recently, helped the US win the Presidents Cup. Fowler finished 4th in the FEDEXCUP and finished 5th in the world ranks as if this article. Not bad for an over-rated player.

As great of a season that Fowler had, there were still golf analysts, as late as August, suggesting that Fowler is a flash in the pan. He would not sustain his great play and doubted if he was one of the future superstars of golf. Of course, when comparing Fowler to Jordan Spieth and Jason Day, all players look a full tier below the two best golfers in the world. But, as I stated in earlier posts, Fowler is ready to be included as one of the future stars of golf.

Since losing his swing coach in May 2011, Barry McDonnell, Fowler tried to find his own way with moderate success. He had a great 2014 season, however something was still missing. In January of this year, he found it in Butch Harmon. Harmon has worked with many of the great players over the years, and Fowler’s choice to work with Harmon immediately paid dividends.

Harmon is best known for having been Tiger Woods’ golf coach from 1993 to 2004, though they have since gone their separate ways. In April 2007, it was announced that Harmon would start working with Phil Mickelson. He has also worked with other major champions such as Ernie Els, Stewart Cink, Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Fred Couples and Justin Leonard, and with younger stars such as Nick Watney, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson,Natalie Gulbis, and most recently Jimmy Walker and Brandt Snedeker. Fowler is a unique player. He is traditionally a slow starter. He reminds me of a snowball being rolled down a hill. At first it is small and unimpressive; but, as it is helped down the hill it starts to grow bigger and bigger. Eventually, it has enough momentum that it rolls by itself and enough mass that everyone starts to take notice. Well, that is Rickie Fowler to a tee! Each year, Fowler starts off slow, but by the end of the season he is a force that is noticed and sometimes feared!

Rickie Fowler had a breakout year in 2015. He exceed all expectations and although overshadowed by Spieth and Day, he is now considered a rising superstar in golf. Rickie Fowler is already a fan favorite and if he continues to improve his game, he will be a multiple Major winner very soon! Congratulations Rickie on a great 2015 professional golf season!

What a Day at the BMW Championship

Congratulations to Jason Day for winning the BWM Championship! The hottest golfer on the planet has succeeded in winning another event of the FedExCup Playoffs. With 4 wins (including his first Major) in his last 6 events, Jason Day is apparently unstoppable and as a result has built an insurmountable lead heading into the Tour Championship next week.

Day’s booming drives, chip-ins, and a sizzling hot putter are just a few tricks he has up his sleeve. His calm and steady demeanour continues to wilt his opponents like a super power! Likely taking over as the world’s top ranked golfer, Jason Day is the new darling of golf! Getting lava hot at the right time, Day is on his way to a big payday in just over a week!

Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, and Henrik Stenson tried to catch Day on the third leg of the playoffs, but they could only watch with dismay as the Australian extended his lead over a world-class field. Unfortunately for Fowler, Watson, and Stenson the race for being the 2015 FedExCup Champion is over. Nobody is catching the red-hot Day!

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth had mediocre to poor runs during the FedExCup playoffs. Regardless of the reason, they could not sustain their outstanding play from early in the year. There hot and cold nature is indicative of professional golf in 2015 and is not likely to change anytime soon! The young players in professional golf hungry, competition fierce and they all want their chance at top golfer.

We could discuss the merits of the FedExCup playoff format, but that would cheapen Jason Day’s performance of the past 6 events. Jason Day has crushed his opponents lately and it seems that he will not stop anytime soon. However, if history repeats itself, he will soon need a break because the hectic schedule and pressure of competing week in and week out does take its toll. But for now, Jason Day is on top of professional golf and all fans look forward to seeing him at the Tour Championship in East Lake GC,  Atlanta, GA next weekend.

Picking a Winner at the PGA Championship

Below is an excerpt of the article I wrote for Pundit Arena. Click here to read all the details.

The difficulty in picking a PGA Champion in 2015 is the field. With so many first-time winners in 2015, any streaking player could knock of the heavy favourites while they trade punches up and down the fairway. The variables are astounding and even the slightest hitch could derail any players dream of winning the PGA Championship.

  • Dark-Horse – Phil Mickelson.
  • Finishing third – Dustin Johnson.
  • Finishing Second – Jordan Spieth.
  • The PGA Championship winner – Rickie Fowler.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the article.

Who is your pick for this weekend?

Hey Bubba, Whats Happening?

Bubba Watson won his first tournament of the 2015 PGA Golf Season. As the PGA expands it market, the HSBC Championship is the second professional event to thrill the Asian golfing fans. To add to the excitement Bubba Watson’s crazy finish on the last hole to force a playoff  with Tim Clark is something that will make the highlight reel as one of the top 10 shots of the year.

Following up his miraculous bunker shot, Watson closed out Tim Clark on the first playoff hole by sinking a long putt. His eagle on the 18th hole helped him leap-frog Rickie Fowler, Graeme McDowell and Hiroshi Iwata. In typical Bubba fashion, his flare for fantastic shots is why he is a top draw at any golfing event! Take his miracle hook shot in the 2012 Masters!

2012 Masters – Bubba Watson’s miracle hook shot!

As the golfing world continues to be enamored with Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Graeme McDowell, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson continues to pop up periodically to proclaim that he should not be forgotten. Ranked number 7 in the world, Bubba Watson’s consistent play is more than enough to stay atop of the golfing world for quite some time.

Creating a charity called ‘Bubba & Friends Drive to a Million’ in 2012, Watson is making a difference in his community. “PING is supporting the “Bubba & Friends Drive to a Million” by donating $300 for every drive he hits 300 yards or more (up to 300 drives) in 2012.” The total number was 37 – 300+ yard drives. Yup, 37 drives, just amazing!

Best known for his booming drives, Bubba Watson’s scramble game is often overlooked. Periodically, he displays his superpowers by seeing shots that only Seve Ballesteros, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson could see. He continually thrills crowds by holing out from the 200 yards, hitting his driver off the fairway, or holing out a bunker shot to force a playoff in a tournament.

Bubba Watson is a fan favorite. He continues to thrill fans with his devil-may-care approach to golf. Personally, I like watching him play, mostly because of the way he attacks the golf course. He shows no fear, at least on the surface, and maneuvers around a course like a rally racer “off-roading” their way through the back woods of Canada! Bubba Watson is fun to watch and definitely worth the price of admission.
