Chipping: Selecting the Right Club at the Right Time

This post is in response to several questions on chipping I received over the past few days. I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts on the matter and explain how I approach my short game.

My short game is my bread and butter. I hit the ball straight most of the time and like all other players, I do miss the green 50% of the time on my approach shots. With that being said, over the years, I spent a great deal of time chipping and pitching the ball. As discussed in yesterday’s post, I am always trying to sink each chip, but we all know that this happens infrequently. Buying Anything Golf

It is that time again. The off-season is here, I conducted my yearly  inventory inspection and realized that I need a new sand wedge. My Titleist Vokey 56° sand wedge shows excessive wear on the grooves, therefore it is time to start my buying process.

Lower Your Golf Score by Using the Correct Wedge

Correct WedgeLowering our golf score is the primary goal of most golfers. Everyone likes to talk about how they conquered the course on a particular day, but for some of us those days are rare.  For example, over the past two golf seasons, I recorded 117 rounds of golf at Golf Canada. Although I did not record all my rounds for various reasons, this number is a good sample for our discussion. Of those rounds, 53% or 63 rounds were in the 70s. Of those, 1 was under par, 1 was par, and 4 were 1 over par. So the number of spectacular rounds worth discussing, in my view, is very small.

These numbers may seem impressive but in reality, the consistency of my game is due to two factors, using the correct wedge around the green and consistent putting. I can say that my improved putting is a direct result of playing the ball closer to the pin after an errant approach shot. Choosing the correct wedge around the green is the focus of this article.

Buying a New Sand Wedge

Image from: http://www.vokey.com/wedges/pages/wedge-selection-guide.aspxToday is the day!  I have waited, researched, and mulled over the purchase of a new sand wedge.  Currently, I use a 30-year-old Ping Eye 2 Black Dot that has been golden for many years.  But, I rarely use it in the fairway because the bounce is too high….so it is time to retire one of my favorite clubs.

On an earlier post, “Choosing a New Wedge” I went through all the aspects to consider and linked you to Goldsmith.com for a more in-depth discussion.  I used these two sites extensively.  They were very helpful and greatly aided in my decision.

Next, I look at reviews.  Reviews are very important to cut through the hype of advertisement.  Virtually every site I went too rated the Titleist Vokey Wedge as the top wedge to buy.  Additionally, I looked at customer reviews because the average golfer has plenty to say and generally are more honest.  The Titleist Vokey Wedge still came out on top.  Next, I went to the Titleist website and found a very good guide to Vokey Wedges with information that could be applied when choosing any wedge.

After all of this, I have chosen to by the Titleist Vokey 56 degree wedge with an 8 degree bounce.  When I hit the links, I will let you know how my decision made out.  \Well, I am off to Golf Town….any thoughts?
