What Happens To Your Golf Game When The Pressure Rises

For many golfers, when the pressure rises to score well, their success goes in the opposite direction. I do not say this lightly and I am not trying to slight anyone, however most golfers do not handle the pressure of a must hit shot very well. If you are wondering why success is so difficult to achieve, one only needs to examine their past experiences. Most amateur golfers rarely play in must make situations with their golf game. With the lack of exposure to pressure shots, many golfers do not have the knowledge to respond properly. Fortunately, I have played in many golf tournaments that produced a plethora of pressure situations; the results have improved as I became a more experienced player.

After watching the RBC Canadian Open yesterday, I realized how great professional golfers are at handling pressure. Nick Taylor came from behind to tie and then this for the win:

The Grateful Golfer and The Canadian Open Trophy!

I mean how can I really talk about being successful during pressure situations when a Canadian won the RBC Canadian Open. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., won the 20213 RBC Canadian Open becoming the first Canadian man to win at home since Pat Fletcher in 1954. Talk about the pressure of a nation weighing on your shoulders for every stroke. Congrats to Nick Taylor on bringing our national championship home.

As you can see, my article did take a bit of a left turn with the topic. Pressure is something that all golfers need to manage to be considered successful in competition or just in a friendly match. Pressure is different for each player, but facing the challenge with confidence and focused decision making will go a long way to gaining the experience needed to conquer all pressure situations. I wish I had a better way to help you face pressure head on, but trial and error was the only teacher I had and it took a long time to get there. If you have any suggestions on handling pressure; please pass on your advice.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
