Your hybrid, often know as your rescue club, is not a new invention. Now about 40 years old, it is a club that has revolutionized the amateur game. If you are like me, hitting the long irons is always a challenge due to my slower clubhead speed. Using a hybrid opens a new dynamic to my game that actually lowered by golf scores. The challenge for many amateurs is how to hit the hybrid to maximize the results for my swing. It can be challenging, however I think I found a video that will break down the complexities of hitting our hybrids.
“The very first hybrid was the “Baffler.” Introduced by Cobra Golf in 1998, the actual design dates back to the 1970s. Designed to help players who struggled with irons, the Baffler quickly became popular with all levels of golfers. That popularity inspired TaylorMade to invent a line they call the “Rescue” clubs. Rescue clubs debuted in 2003 and today TaylorMade offers an entire line of hybrids.” (Evolution of Hybrid Clubs)
Personally, I like to hit my hybrid like an iron. It helps me generate greater contact by hitting the ball squarely on the club face. Additionally, hybrids are very forgiving, so mishits still produce a fair bit of distance. If you wondering how to hit a hybrid, take a look at the following:
I like this video because Gilles helps us set up our hybrid that will fit most players. It will take a bit of adjusting to match a hybrid to our swing, but the foundation is there in the video. Additionally, I like the tee drill. You will notice he is hitting off a mat, therefore there is a not divot. I would caution you when hitting off the ground to avoid digging in with your hybrid as that was my tendency when I first tried the tee drill.
Knowing how to hit our hybrids is a game changer. It adds a dimension to our game that will lower our golf scores. Personally, I use a 3 and 4 hybrid with great success. I did have to work at it a bit and the time spent on the range has paid off exponentially. If you do not have a hybrid in your bag or you are remise to use it, it might be time to revisit that decision. Of course, the final choice is always up to you.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
I adore my hybrids. I carry a 4, 5, and a 6. And that 6 is a monster game changer. I hit it today on our number 10 hole. It’s a par 4 dogleg right. Short hole meant to be played 150 out and 100 in. But if you can clear the trees which are pretty close, it’s only about 185 to the green from the tee box.
Most of the guys use a driver on the hole. They tee it high and hit tall slices over the trees to get the height and distance they need. But with that 6 hybrid, I can go right at the green and clear the trees with room to spare. At least I can go right at where I think it is. I missed today by about 3 feet. Right under the hole and just missed my chip for eagle.
I couldn’t hit that shot with my 6 iron. It would never clear those trees. Never really get close to it. I like my 6 iron. It’s a great club. But that hybrid is just a joy to hit. And it’s possible to hit a lower trajectory drawing shot with it too. Kind of punchy, but that helps fill in the gapping difference between 7 iron and 5 hybrid better than my 6 iron does.

Kevin,
Great shot. There is no wrong answer when it comes to hybrids. Some people like them and others prefer irons. What ever works for your game.
Cheers Jim
