Topping the ball is a challenge that plagues many beginners. I know when I first started this miss hit was a minor issue. I corrected this swing hitch, but I never really thought of how. I just continued to hit more and more balls without being conscious of what I was doing. After all these years of playing, I came across a video by Hank Haney that actually described my error from long ago. It is a simple fix and I wish I knew about it when I first started.
Basically, Haney talks about hitting through the ball by ensuring our lead arm stays straight. This movement forces the clubhead down through the ball and creates the conditions for solid contact. It makes complete sense to me.
The next time you find yourself topping the ball, think about keeping your lead arm straight (extended) in order to hit the bottom of the golf ball. It is a simple fix that could go a long way to improving our ball striking.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
Great little tip. I shall try to bear it in mind on Thursday when I set foot on a golf course for the first time in 2 and a half years! Rob

Rob,
May you hit the ball straight and far. If nothing else, have a great time!

I won’t argue with Haney but I would submit that swaying is also a cause of topping the ball as it is for hitting fat.

Kevin,
There are many ways to top the ball, Haney offers only one solution.
