Grip it and rip it is something being taught in the earlier stages of golf swing development. The thought process is by teaching a beginner to create plenty of clubhead speed, then control can be taught at a later date. I am not here to argue about the new approach, however as an older golfer, I have noticed that many of my playing partners have a tendency to lose their balance during their golf swing. Either through overswinging or ‘trying to help the ball’, their balance is rarely the same through contact. These types of swing faults are quite common, but can be fixed.
I know when my swing is off balance because of my follow through position or hip position at the end of the swing. If I do not rotate through contact properly, I can tell because it feels wrong and my ball does not follow my intended path. So, how can I fix this prior to hitting the links. I found a quick drill that I can do in my garage and it will definitely help. If is designed to ensure proper rotation through my lead hip by focusing on balance through contact. As an older golfer, I see this drill has benefits.
**PSA** – when attempting any drills off the internet, ensure you are physically capable. You should consult your physician if you have any doubt or concerns about your ability to move as suggested. Safety first, always.
I can do this drill and will try to incorporated it in my warm up. I think it has benefits by reminding my body the proper movement through my lead hip. Fortunately for me, my golf swing already follows something similar through contact, but it never is a bad thing to remind myself the proper way to swing my golf club and maintain my balance.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
