From time to time I have a challenge with my golf swing. It suddenly shows up mostly because I forget to stay focused. I feel like I am all over the place and no matter what I try I cannot get comfortable over the ball. It is a failing of mine, but over the years of struggling, I found a solution that works for my game. Sometimes I can regain my swing quickly and others it takes a few holes. Regardless, I can reset my swing but there is one thing that I have to do first and it is a must!
I am sure you have figured out what I need to do before anything else. I need to stop fighting my swing. Yup, it sounds really simple, but sometimes it is not that easy. My ego is such where I feel I should have full command over my game that my first response is to fight what I am doing wrong. To instantly start to think about making changes like how to swing, where to make contact, helping my ball or flipping my hands through a chip. Funny, one would think that someone of my experience would respond to a tough swing day better. Well, as you can see, it happens to everyone.

Once I stop fighting my swing errors, my reset process is very simple. I grab my 7 iron, set up my stance, empty my mind and swing away. I remove all swing thoughts and let my muscle memory take over. After a couple of shots with my favourite club, I am usually reset. The odd time I will need another shot, but not normally. Clearing my head of all swing thoughts allows me reset my mind in order to swing freely.
Most days I have zero issues with my swing. I do miss it a ball from time to time, but generally do not fight my mechanics. I have very little swing thoughts and I trust my processes to play solid golf. Those are the days I love best when on the links. But, when things to awry I am ready!
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
If we’re fighting our swing we’ve lost our focus and the best way I know to get it back or get it started is simply stop thinking about it and go back to basics.
What I mean by that is I’m going to think all I want about setup until I’m comfortable, and then I want to forget everything but target. I need target to be my only focus.
And I want to choose conservative shots I know I can hit until my confidence builds back.
That helps me return to decent play faster and limits the damage at the same time.

Kevin,
That sounds about right. It is difficult in the moment to change our focus back to the basics, however if we step back and think…..good things happen.
