Possible Rule Changes To Make In Golf

I stumbled across this video regarding potential rule changes in golf. As I watched the justification to why some of the rules of golf could be changed, I tried to wrap my mind around the validity of the argument. After watching it, twice, I think some of the recommendations have merit. So, I figured I would post this discussion and see what you the reader has to say.

As I took the time to think about the proposal, my first thoughts was absolutely not! The game is designed to be tough and only the top players in the world are showing the skill needed to be considered elite in golf. Then, I did a fair bit of introspection and started to think about the impact of the rule changes on my game and golf at the local level. Realistically, my game has peaked and some of the changes would make playing golf more enjoyable.

So, what do you think? Does the author make a commanding argument for changing these seven rules of golf. Or, do you have other suggestions that would make golf more fun and equitable? Or, you think the rules are good just the way they are? Let us know what you are thinking!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. I once bought a bag that had 15 slots. Didn’t bother counting, I just filled them all. 2 years later while moving clubs to another new bag, I finally realized I’d been carrying too many.

When you’re just out playing by yourself or with your friends, don’t have or care about handicaps, rules like 14 clubs don’t matter really and can go totally unnoticed.

I can live with 14, but I’d carry 16 if I could. I played with the extra 2 I’d carry (3&5) for years and there are times when I miss them. Not every round maybe, but some shots I’d feel more confident with the old club rather than it’s replacement. I don’t want to go back, but we’ll, a little more confidence on a shot or three a month might be a small gain but I’d call it worth it. I’m not carrying, I’m pushing.

  2. I don’t have a problem with any of them. And in fact, I really like the ideas mostly. Especially the ability to carry more than 14 clubs would come in handy for me after switching to fairway woods and hybrids for the longer irons.

For instance my 3 iron got replaced with a 5 wood but I can’t slice a 5 wood low around a corner like I could a 3 iron. That’s a shot I hopefully won’t run into often, but it’s a shot that can save strokes.

    • Kevin,

I am not sure I would carry more than 14 clubs. I do not use them all now, but I understand your point. I do like the idea of learning to make shots with the ones I have as mentioned in the video. I have played rounds with guys that carry more than 14 clubs, but only use about six of them. When I asked about why, they said that they too lazy to remove the extra clubs.

      Cheers Jim
