Working On Hitting My 3 Wood

I purchased a Mizuno 3 wood a couple of years back. Since, I have been hit and miss (pardon the pun) on contact with this club. When I hit it well, I am happy with my 225 yards. However, with the slightest miss hit and I struggling to get over 200 yards. This disparity is something that I need address sooner than later. Knowing this, I have decided to focus some of my efforts on hitting this important club well. I know I have the ability to make great contact, but I need more consistency in order hit closer to 225 yards more often than not. The question is how?

The biggest challenge I have is inconsistency. Sometimes I take a large divot (definitely not recommended) and other times I only hit the ball. There has to be a happy medium between the two and after watching Rick Shiels’ video, I think I know what my challenge when hitting my 3 wood.

Shiels spends a fair bit of time talking about ball position. And after a mental review, I find that I position my ball too far forward in my stance. I never realized this before and as such need to find the ‘sweet spot’ in order to make consistent contact with the ball. I knew that using a tee and hitting off the ground were different and I think I have been trying to apply the tee method to the off the deck shot. This is really making me wonder right now.

Fortunately, I will have time to work this challenge out. I plan to focus on ball position the next time I play (there is no range at my home course). It should be a quick fix…..I know famous last words. I will move the ball back in my stance just a bit and see it it promotes the contact I am seeking. I will let you know how things work out next time I play.

A quick update on my stats taking. Yesterday, I improved my GIR to 9 greens. The misses were from approximately 145 yards or farther and were mostly short, but on target. This is something I can work on and will continue to track my successes moving forward.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. I had trouble hitting my 3 wood for years. Who I am kidding, decades. šŸ˜‚

Moving it back in my stance was the fix that worked for me. I set my stance so that the ball is about in the same position I would hit my 5 iron with the 3 wood, and it’s in the middle with the 5 wood.

One more thing, some of us hit the 5 wood better than we hit the 3. You may be in that boat with me. Shaving a little off the length of the 3 wood helped me get more consistent and I can’t say I lost even a yard because I get a better strike which of course send the ball farther.

    • Kevin,

I can hit my 3 wood okay, but need more consistency. I will try moving it back in my stance today as that seems to be the recommended fix. In the past, I never had a challenge with this club….not sure what changed. Time to check things out. Thanks for the help.

      Cheers Jim
